AWD mpg

I am curious as to what MPG other AWD owners are getting. I'm still in the break-in period; the mpg is not good. The first tank was a mix of freeway+local, I got 15ish MPG. I'm on the second tank, almost 100% local, and it looks like it's gonna be 1ess than 15. No flooring the pedal here. What gives? In the morning, when I start I wait for the RPM to drop from 2000 to around 1000-1500. Is idling at start necessary?

update: the dealer said no need to wait for RPM to drop at cold start. the low mpg is still a mystery.

update: 2500 miles in, the mpg seems improving a bit. on purely high way, it gets 21+. waiting to see if the recent recall fix will help more.

That sounds about right. I normally get about 14-15 with mostly city driving. I have gotten as low as about 13 but it has leveled out at 14-15 for almost 100% city driving.

I am around 500 miles and havent done the calculation but i think I had to fill up around 225-245, all local miles - so not good here. I had plans to not drive the CX7 till november because I have a company car but I need to put more miles on it to see if it improves - i may not be ready for a turbo yet...

This whole subject is running-on-empty by now. It has been hashed and re-hashed in probably 2 dozen various threads here ad nauseum(bang)

The cold idle rpm is normal and likely has nothing to do with your mpg. I have more than 6000 miles in all different conditions, and my running average is about 18.5.

Some report very low efficiency at 12 - 14, others claim 21 plus...

I think the DISI Turbo engine can drink alot of fuel that is not necessary for it to perform - it will take a gulp, but all it needs is a sip.

I have found that this car can accelerate quite well with tender communication thru the pedal, and I never really felt any noticable lag that many have bemoaned either. Punching it is not necessary, just let it follow thru with deliberate but controlled push on the pedal. Enjoy the car, have fun, learn what it wants & likes, and it will do fine.

Yea what he said its like a vagina...(jerkit)

With 3,000 miles on mine, I'm getting a fairly consistent 20MPG with about a 60/40 ratio of city/highway driving. I'm satisfied with that.

I've averaged about 18mpg all summer with mixed driving... I do more highway driving in the summertime.

It depends on how you drive and where you live. Gas in the northeast sucks and you'll get much worse MPG than other places in the country. When I first got the CX-7, doing mostly city driving, I got anywhere from 13-15mpg.

I have had my new CX-7 for about three weeks now and mileage seems to improve slightly with each fill-up. I have a 110 mile roundtrip daily commute so I am driving about 85% interstate and 15% city and my last two tanks were very close to 20 mpg. This is not great, however, I have found that a brand new car always gets sub-par gas mileage at first but ALWAYS improves after the first or second oil change.

I am coming from a 2006 Civic Si which got 31-32 mpg all the time in the same driving conditions, BUT when brand new it was only getting 25 mpg...my advice is to give it time, your CX-7 will get improved mpg over time. ALSO, with a turbo engine your mpg is going to vary greatly with how hard you're pushing the car obviously...it doesn't take much to get the CX-7 going so stomping on it at every stop light is pointless and a huge waste of gas.

I drive my new CX-7 "swiftly" meaning easy stops and starts but on the interstate I will give it a little gas to fly around those jackasses who think the left lane is for driving 60mph in a 70mph zone. I recently installed the K&N air filter and I am excited to see how much gas mileage will improve on the next few tanks. For you non-believers...I've noticed 2-3 mpg improved mileage in every new car that I've put a K&N in, it works.

The K&N filter immediately changed the intake sound in my new CX-7, you can hear a nice intake roar now and I swear that I can actually hear it sucking more air into the engine! I thought the CX-7 was much too quiet after coming from my Civic Si but now with the K&N it's got just enough sporty growl to keep me happy.

Wow. I'm glad I got a FWD model. I'm putting down 400 miles to a tank, with the air on all the time, seeing as it's hot as balls here in FL. Of course, I don't even attempt to go fast, as there's no real point in any type of SUV/CUV, so I'm out of the throttle all of the time anyway. I've also found that if I shift the gears, I get consistently better mpg than letting the cpu shift. It'll hold 5th gear FOREVER!!

My best is 29mpg.

bonnd007,
I'd fill up and proceed to abuse the car until is empty.lot of time at WOT....that'll losen up the engine a bit.

Also, change the factory oil.....NOW!!!! Use Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30. This is free advice to you that has cost me and others money! Don't take it for granted....have a little faith!

I have an AWD Touring and in the city I am averaging 19 ~ 20 MPG. On my last highway trip I got 28 MPG doing 80 -85 with the AC on the entire way. Shot out to Vegas for the weekend. Just hit 10,000 miles.

See, it gets better with time!!! This is the case with nearly all new cars, put about 5K miles on your CX-7 and mileage will improve significantly I'm sure.

well said!:)

My mileage got better after 4000 miles of driving.
I was getting 17mpg before now I get about 18.5mpg, but I live in southern california where traffic(stop and go) is very frequent.

I get a very consistent 17 mpg. It's almost entirely city driving and I like to get on it every now and then.

Have about 7000 miles on it.
