On the front of this post it mentions that the unit has to be turned off so that's why I still ask. On the auxmod site I dind't see specifically where it adressed that conscern.
That's cool that all you do it tap the tape button.

I'm sorry to bring up an old thread but I have a question and I don't feel like reading 17 pages. My buddy has an 02 P5 with the 6-disc In-Dash changer. He wants to connect his iPod using the cheapest means necessary until we can get our employee accomodation from pioneer (takes about 2 months to get stuff.) Can we buy the aux input cable? I'm asking because it says it plugs into the cd changer port but in this case it's built in. Anyone have suggestions

Let me rephrase...If we buy the aux cable will it work?

What is the difference in sound quality between the auxmod and an fm modulator? I would think the sound quality from an fm modulator would be pretty good considering the output from an mp3 player or satelite radio would be hard wired to the antenna input. this cutting out any interferance. Am I wrong in assuming that? Right now I have a sirius starmate replay in my car just using the built-in fm transmitter and the sound quality is horrible. I hear a constant hiss and some white noise at high volumes. Will this still be present if using a modulator? I like the idea of using the auxmod, but if the sound quality isn't that much different, it's not worth twice as much. Anyone has experience with both the auxmod and fm modulator?

I have the Auxmod and I'd gladly recommend it. The difference between auxmod and the FM Modulator is night and day. I use it for my XM SkyFi2. With the Auxmod, you will need a ground loop isolator to prevent radio noise from coming in. Just pick one up at your local electronics store...like Radio Shack...or Fry's.
Just get it, its worth it. You can finally hear the sound that XM or Sirius is always advertising....cd quality. Plus you can connect an MP3 player to the Auxmod also!
Out of a rating of 10 - sound quality = 10, ease of installation = 10

Hey guys, I just got the PIE MAZ/PC-ALP, ordered it off ebay (logjam doesnt ship to cananda).
Anyway, heres my problem... I got the ALP/M-3.5. connector for it. When I hook that into my mp3 player (ipod), the sound is crap, and its mono, not stereo! (confused)
I thought the M-3.5 would be a stereo jack. I mean, the jack itself has 2 black strips on it... that means its stereo does it not? I thought it would be the same as getting the M-RCA, just without having to convert the RCA to 3.5mm afterwards.

PS. I have an aux mod on order too, but that will be months before I get it. I want mp3 funcionality for the summer.

Just did a little more research, a diskman seems to work in stereo ok, though the sound quality isnt quite what the stock cd player is, its better than my ipod. I also tried my girlfriends mp3 player, and it is also mono sound. Im totally confused as to whats going on here. A diskman works ok in stereo, but mp3 players dont?
The only thing that comes to my mind is a ground loop isolator, but thats more for problems with engine noise, which Im not really getting. Could it be possible that a ground loop isolator might also solve general low quality sounding problems and my stereo issue?

No, ground loop isolators only reduce whine and other noise from the system...besides that they don't improve sound quality

Just chiming in

I finally read through all 17 pages (there's not much to do at work today...lol). I just got my P5 last weekend so i finally got around to looking for an ipod adapter. I have an aftermarket pioneer hu from my last car, but for some reason the rca outs burned out.

It seems like the guys at sylfex did a great job on the first version. It's good to see people provide affordable, legitimate alternatives to the ridiculously expensive ipod adapters. I'm going to put myself on the wait list for the advanced beta version. I hope the cost will be under $100. If it is, it'll definitely worth the stereo control and text display IMO.

Is there a definitive solution to accessing aux input on protege 5?

i am read thru this forum trying to find the simplest and most cost effiecient solution to getting audio into the aux input or the minidisc input on the protege 5 stereo. we have the factory stereo without the cd changer and i would like to tap into the stereo with my ipod. thanks in advance, sorry if i missed something on here.

All, this is a great thread - I'm thinking of buying the same OEM unit for my Miata (for the 6 disc changer, clean look, etc). I have a question about the specs on it... what's the power rating? Can an external amp be added to it? Anyone know of any of the freq specs on it? I've found a unit that supposedly (from the ad) states that it was a premium sound package that powered 6 speakers and a sub. Does this sound right?

I just installed mine today, but not with the best results, unfortunately. The sound quality is very poor, I don't believe everything is working the way it's supposed to. Hard to describe, but definitely doesn't sound the way it should. I'm not entirely sure what I can do about it though, as I'm sure everything is connected correctly.

AuxMod Install w/o Removing HU (Protege/Protege5 only)

Hi all, back again... I just received the Sylfex AuxMod board a few days ago and installed it today in my 2003 Protege5. The thing is, I spent more time trying to figure out how to remove the entire head unit (HU) than actually installing the AuxMod board.

That said, I found it MUCH easier to just remove the Tape/MD bay faceplate and install the board without removing the HU (NOTE: Mazda3 or Mazda6 models need to remove the entire HU). It's not SUPER easy, but if you have a bit of patience, you'll probably save yourself a load of hassle you'd get trying to get the HU out.

1. Disconnect car battery terminals (protect yourself + the components)
2. Remove the Tape/MD faceplate - the port that the AuxMod board plugs into is in plain view (back middle of the bay on the topside)
3. Practice maneuvering the board into position without taking the film off the doublestick pads. It's pretty simple, and the HVAC cables allow you to use them as a guide. The board does not snap in place - it sits very loosely in the port, hence the need for sticky pads.
4. Now that you've got it in place, pull the board back out, remove the double-stick protective film and maneuver the board back in place VERY carefully.
5. Press the board firmly to make sure it sticks.
6. Plug in your 3.5mm (1/8") stereo jack... you should really use a GLI (Ground Loop Insulator) to avoid the interference in the audio when driving the car - will occur for any audio source plugged into the cig lighter power. Radio Shack's is the one I used.
7. My setup is AuxMod connected via 3.5mm, split to Red/Why phono jacks to GLI, GLI red/wht phono jacks split back to 3.5mm, where I can connect m iPod/Sirius.
8. Once you have your wiring all fished to where you need it, MAKE SURE you securely fasten the 3.5mm wiring to the HU case with cable ties - as close to the board connection as possible, for two reasons (1. to keep the plug plugged in even with extensive jarring/bumping... 2. to keep the weight of the wiring/GLI from pulling on the AuxMod board.)
9. Close everything up (i.e. the Tape/MD bay faceplate) and you're done!

Hope this helps - I really did find it 10X easier to not remove the HU and saved my dash/etc from getting scratched up.
