Aux Input, On Its Way

Good to hear that the product works perfectly!! (OverLOAD, you guys gonna make it a verified yes for the Protege5?) Where did you run the wire to? I was thinking of tapping out the plate for the MD/Tape module and putting a female connector in there...
I just ran the wire out the back of the HU and behind the dash. I ended up outletting it near the floor-heater vent on the passenger side and running the wire under the center console to my XM receiver.....nothing custom but it works for me.

Good luck finding another alternative at less than $50.....me (and many others like me) have been looking for something like this for months and months (for some maybe even years) with no luck. The PIE unit goes into the changer port but even that is over $100. Others companies weren't even willing to attempt to develop a MD/Tape aux input. Kudos to Sylfex...I hope they're successful.

UPDATE ON AUXMOD!

I'm proud to announce that AUXMOD by Sylfex works perfectly in protege's! I installed mine today (just got it today, after dreaming about it for a year and a half now), and it installed very easily. The sound quality is cd quality. I am so happy with this product. I'll post some pictures of how my ipod is set up with it in the next few days. If you're looking to purchase one, get on the wait list now, because there is already a long line (I was in the mid 300's, and I'm pretty sure there are at least 600 people in line now).

Thanks sylfex!

Works in a 2002 Protege P5

I don't have pictures but confirmation that it works great in a P5. Man is this too freakin cool. My wife loves it.

Here's what we did - we each have a PalmOne Treo and in each car we have a Seidio Car Cradle. Then we can use the Treo as a hands free phone through the stereo ( it sounds great in the car and like any other handfree on the other end of the call ). The only exposed part of the setup is the cradle - everything else is in the dash - cables are routed up through existing gaps in the dash near the steering wheel. I looks slick. Everything is hidden. All she needs to do is press the button on the HU to listen to the audio from the Treo.

Plus we use the MP3 ability of the Treo and a 1gb SD card (soon to be 2gb) to play MP3's and Audible Audio Books in the car.

This little device worked great and the sound quality is frankly perfect. It took a while to get the device, but I am extremely happy with it.

I was #488- mine finally arrived just after I left for a road trip. (Dang.) But I put it in my '03.5 PR5 and it is absolutely amazing. I didn't screw around- I got the ground loop isolator beforehand from Crutchfield as well. Everything went together just fine and I swear it sounds better than the CD.

I know everyone else has already confirmed that the auxmod works great but I have to say it too since this is what I've been waiting for since before I even bought my MP3 player. I was in the mid 600's for those of you still on the waiting list wanting to know how far its gotten. Good luck to anyone still waiting, dont worry its worth it.

So who installed a Ground Loop Isolater and who didn't? Are we pretty much guranteed an alternator whine if we don't? Just wondering if I too should go and pick one up ahead of time? Any successful installs without one that sounds great? Thanks!

I put one in because at night when I turned my lights on it would whine pretty bad....wasn't unbearable but enough to annoy me.

Did it whine when the player was on battery power or when it was plugged in to the cig adapter or both?

My XM receiver only operates plugged in so I'm not sure. I would imagine if it was using battery power it would not whine because there would not be the problem of multiple grounds.

Hi Guys,

Here's the unwritten rule of thumb:

-If you use a battery (self) powered device only, you don't need a GLI
-If you use a Accessory (car) powered device, you probably do need a GLI

You won't get a ground loop from a battery powered device. It just doesn't happen. Ont he other side of the coin, if the powered device you are using doesn't have strong filtering in its power supply, it can make for very noisy interference without a GLI. Some are far better then others, and may not even be noticable.

If you're not sure about the source of the GLI noise, try running with the car on Batter power (ie, not running, but Ignition at ON, or ACC). That usually results in a substantial reduction in feedback noise.

Regards,

OverLOAD

Here's my US$.02:

This is installed in your dash - and although you may have an idea what you will attach - you really don't know what you are going to attach to it. For instance - you may have an mp3 player now that only runs on batteries. But you may get a phone in a year that has the ability to play mp3s and well it requires you to have a car adapter. You now need more cables outside the dash - exposed and looking trashy.

Think about it -

You already have the dash open to install the AuxMod.

Install a GLI! They are not expensive - heck you can even pick one up at RadioShack if you are in a bind. Then seal up the dash and never worry about the sound quality again. Simple. It is worth the small expense and will add basically nothing to the difficulty of installing the AuxMod.

Yup... kinda what I was thinking. OverLOAD thanks for the explanation... that does make perfect sense... you know, two GROUND points as opposed to one. Gotcha. I for one will be picking one up from RadioShack as soon as my AuxMod comes in.
Thanks everyone for the feedback!!!

Hey, I just got the confirmation email and ordered mine. They must be moving right along, I was like #995 on the list! Anyway, does anyone have a quick link on head unit removal instructions for a 2003 Protege? Or should I just get a professional to do it considering I've never done this before (I could probably figure it out, but I just bought this car 3 months ago and I don't want to screw anything up ;)

Sylfex AuxMod... on its way!

I was on the waiting list at Sylfex for the AuxMod.... thought it would take a long time, so i installed a FM Modulator just a few weeks ago.... was invited to order the AuxMod today... oh well, i will gladly remove the radio again to enjoy improved sound from my Ipod... that should be very nice.

Good thing that the radio is easily removed.... my Sunbird with non standard radio opening was a nightmare... i love my "3"

Don't know if all dealers are this cool but... to install mine I sure didn't want to f-up any of my trim or the radio so I called the dealer and they told me to just swing by and they'd pull it for me. It was great... just slipped in there one afternoon and it took him less than a min to just get it loose. Then I went home and installed the AuxMod. Which works perfectly! =)

Give your dealer a call if you don't want to mess with it, they'll prob help you out.

Well, I decided to do it myself, and it really wasn't that bad. The hardest part was getting the head unit out in the first place. I never found *detailed* intsructions online, but I found enough to realize I needed the 'ford radio removal tool'. Of course I'm too lazy/cheap to go to the auto store to get the 'proper' removal tool, so I made them out of a coathanger, which actually worked fine (I tried it with a lower gague wire, but it was too flimsy). Sounds MUCH MUCH better than the FM transmitter I was using.

chill the **** out.

some people, myself included, really like how the stock stereo goes with the rest of the interior, especially at night. some people don't want to blow $299+ on a new head unit. i rather like the big ass tuning/volume knobs over the inky dinky fingernail buttons that most aftermarket units are riddled with. jesus, no need to sound off like that :(

(smoke) Nice to know someone who share the same view and even voice it out for me.
