Torque Pro app on my Android device is picking up A/T temps at between 88 and 92 C (190 and 198 F) when driving on the highway and fully warmed up. I think city driving numbers were the same. Are those normal numbers for the A/T on the 2nd gen 5? Anybody have a ScanGauge or something similar that can pick up tranny temp readings?

Perfectly normal operating temps, and incidentally about fifteen degrees above the water temps on average. Ive had a trans temp gauge on my SG II for a couple of years now.
Well, I changed app layout and put A/T temps next to coolant. Identical numbers and move in unison so not sure how accurate that reading is. On my other car, 2009 Hyundai Sonata, I get no data for A/T temp at all (coolant gets read through). Could be adapter/interface issue. Or it's the app. I need to start saving up for SGe/SGII.
I appreciate the input about temp difference. If coolant is 82C (180F) which it was at one point today then ATF would be 90C (195F). That seems ok. Now, if my coolant goes up to 92 C (198 F) -- I think that's what it was yesterday if the A/T temp reading is actually same as coolant -- then ATF is about 100C (212F) which seems high. Although perhaps it's not always 15 degrees F higher than coolant. I'll need to watch and learn, I suppose.

In a stock set up, is the ATF cooler part of the radiator assembly?
As to intervals, I've had dealer service folks tell me every 30K, dealer parts people tell me 60K, the owners manual tell me nothing... I think 30K is the way to go to be safe.
But back on topic, I'd like to understand temps of my transmission for education if nothing else. I expected something in 160-200 F range. It looks like I may be running hotter than the average of that range.

The word from mazda is the tranny fluid is "life time" fluid.
The joke it, it is just very short life time.
Stock ATF cooler is a separate unit about the size of a large cup that runs tranny fluid against coolant so tranny fluid would always be same or above coolant. cuz they would heat exchange from each other.
I have the extra cooler, will locate the adapter for the torque app and check it out. I can't recall my readings.

Vasy is correct, the factory "cooler" is actually more of a warmer, intended to get the trans fluid up to optimum temps as quickly as possible. The highest fluid temp ive seen is 215 degrees Fahrenheit for the trans, i swap my fluid every 60k using the three drain and fill method. I have used the Castrol Maxlife the last two times i did this and my trans has zero issues at 214k

So you essentially do a flush as most of the old fluid (about 80%) should be out after three D&F's. Makes sense. As to fluid choice, do you use Castrol Transmax Import Multi-Vehicle ATF or Valvoline MaxLife Full Synthetic (red bottle)?

I was going to ask how you actually got the A/T temp to show up because I always pulled coolant temp with Torque Pro
Since you guys use the Castrol Import ATF, have you ever come across the P0841 code?
Not yet. I did a full flush on mine twice so far to rid of the stock fluid completely.
Car runs and shifts very nicely with the Castrol. My car only has 70,000km, about 44,000 miles. So not exactly long term results.
Had Castrol in there since 25k km / 15k miles
Knock on wood, no... but what does that code have to do with Castrol ATF specifically? I thought Castrol Transmax Import is decent fluid and should work well for at least 30K miles.

I thought I read somewhere that if you use an aftermarket ATF that this can be an issue but maybe it is just me (yippy)
I believe I read a thread on this earlier today. I think there was a fellow forum member with this code and a failed transmission. He was using OEM fluid.
Torque App can only communicate with the PCM not the TCM so it can't read the ATF temp. I believe the App just substitutes ECT. See Silentnoise713's cooler install thread for some number comparisons with and without an auxiliary cooler.

As to the app, I did not know it couldn't read TCM but my posts above confirm that coolant temps are same as A/T temps. Now, I understand that ScanGauge devices actually read TCM, right?

My Scangauge II does read Trans fluid temps as an X gauge, yes. I mis-typed earlier, I used The Maxlife fluid, didn't mean to mix up manufacturer names.
