I love the autodimming mirror, but what exactly is the technology behind it? Guess I'm a dumbass for not knowing, but it sort of fascinates me.

Thanks!

that mirror looks pretty sick, do you know how much it cost from the dealership?

I want to say it was right around $400 as an option (not sure, though). It was worth it though with all the jacked up hillbillies ridin' my ass on the freeway.

Mazdastuff.com has it for $194 + shipping.

Ok...dont make fun of me here but, on the auto dimming mirror there is a button on the right that changes the temp format. What exactly does the button on the left do? Does it have a function? :p (spin)

Damn that price is pretty steep , I thought I could get one for around $90 I rather get the NA downpipe from wagnersports for that much.

Downpipe

So, can anyone explain how the "dimming" works (looking for a technical explanation of what exactly goes on inside the rearview)?

Thanks!

I think there is a little 'eye' on it that detects the light. Don't ask me what's in it though. Kinda like the ones for the automatic headlights.

Thanks WillisW555.

What I'm really after here is how the thing actually dims (what is going on inside the mirror that makes the rear glass appear tinted?)

This is a pretty lame curiosity, I know, but I just don't get it. (scratch)

I think it might be the same technology that they came out with for home window a few years ago- they polarize the glass with electricity-

Ahhh...thanks! Even though I don't totally get how that works (I was an English major), at least it makes some sense now.

I ask anyone who gets in my car how it works, and nobody can answer. Thanks shinzen!

if you have a dark tint on the rear window the auto dimming feature may not work....?

you do know the wagner downpipe is over $400, right?

What!!!!!! I heard from somebody here that it was around $180-200 I'am going to e-mail wagnersports and see. If it cost that much then forget that also.

How does this mirror install? Does it run on batteries, or does it need to be hooked up to the car's electrical supply?

I did not get this option because I've never had an issue with conventional mirrors in the past. But with the P5, when I manually flick the mirror it gives me a great view of the map light module and headliner. Do other people have this problem (might be only with the sunroof).

here's andy's email...

The downpipe incorporates a metallic core high flow random technologies cat. This only replaces the first cat and a midpipe with a second highflow cat is on the way. The cost for the downpipe itself is $425, the midpipe should be around $325, and a header would be around $500. These are all tig-welded units that will bolt in. They are made of 304 stainless steel.
