Auto Dimming Mirror Install

Well I just got done installing the auto-dimming mirror...how many of you have did this on a 2010 MS3?

Even with the instructions, it took me a good hour and 20 minutes to get past step 4 (a-pillar removal). The illustration they give you tells you almost nothing at all about removing the a-pillar, and it's hard to even tell what you're looking at in the instructions. What took the longest was realizing that you HAVE to give it a good yank more then you think you do to disengage the tabs THEN you have to remove the twist-tab. I tried for almost an hour to remove the twist tab without the primary tabs released.

The next INSANE feat that the instructions "simply" instuct you to do is to splice into a wire in one of the harnesses. Well after looking for over a minute for the harness I discovered it has about 5% visability because of all the junk under the dash. It's tucked WAAAAYYYYY on up in there. I tried for almost a half hour to splice it but had no luck. Finally I decided to just unplug the harness so you could pull it out and work with it more freely...which of course, wasn't listed in the instructions. I honestly think it would be completely impossible to do this splice without removing the harness first.

All said and done, it took me over 3 hours to do this install. Even with all the griping and scratched knuckles I still think it's better then having had port install it all sloppy like they're known for. And then there's the completely obsurd quote that the dealership game me of around $200 for the install...which is just about what I paid for the mirror itself! If you are handy with minor car interior work, save the money and do it yourself. Few bumps along the road but all-in-all a reasonably easy addition.

So who else has did this to a 2010 MS3? Anyone else struggle to understand how the #$%& the a-pillar clips attached?

Sounds like the 07-09 install isn't near as retarded.

A former how-to write up will follow soon.

You wanna bet? The instructions that came with the dealer supplied Homelink & compass mirror tells you to tap into the WRONG wire for a constant. I had the dealership throw in the mirror & install to sweeten the deal when I purchased the car and they installed it as per the bungled instructions so for the first few months, my Homelink never worked. They actually came out with a TSB for this to correct it and I managed to stumble upon it and figured it out for myself afterward.

I guess I didn't clarify on what I meant by 07-09's aren't as retarded....I was referring to A-pillar removal.

WOW, that's a pretty friggin huge mistake...especially after all the effort it takes to get to the friggin harness in these things. (I'm gonna assume harness location was similar to where it was on the 2010)

As much as it costs to buy one of these, I think it's one of the best single interior mods you can add on to the car. I'd pay for it again if I had the choice!

Yeah, it's a nice addition but I wouldn't pay what the dealer charges for one of these things, I'd just get it online instead. But I can't complain as I got mine for free.

I'm pretty sure the install procedure is about the same, run wire along the A-pillar and tap into a couple of wires in the driver side kickpanel.

Yeah i'm sure it hasn't changed too much. However, I can't account for how insanely placed the harness is in the 07-09's vs the mess on the 2010s.

As for price, YEAH, no way i'd pay the $275+ from the dealer for it. Got it online at Mazdagear.com for $220 to my door, including the installation kit which tags on another $30 at the dealer. Saves you almost $100 by getting it online!

I feel your pain. Sometimes company design stuff that are supposed to be simple into a complicated mess. I tried replacing the ballast to my stock HID Lexus IS250, turns out, you can only replace the bulbs, or the whole entire unit. The dealers wanted 900 for each side + 4 hours of labor @ 100 an hour. F* That, i sold the lexus and got an MS3.

Reading this makes me glad my car had this option when it was delivered to the dealer.
