2017~2025 Auto climate control always turns on AC

Good info Anchorman.

If the auto is on will the condenser fan still run regardless of the compressor loading up?
I have found that with cars in the past, but haven't bothered to check the cx-5, I usually have the aircon off.

With the cx-5 I find if you turn the car of with out aircon on, then the car restarts in the same state, I find it much easier to operate the aircon this way as I struggle to read the display while driving.

If I want to demist then just pushing the screen demist button clears the screen, when I turn it off the aircon also turns off.
I operate the Auto Climate Control system the same way like you do. I dont use Auto Mode as I found the full blast of very cold air in Auto Mode each time I start up the CX-5 during this cold weather is definitely not pleasant!

The compressor (A/C) will always default to on after it has been switched off otherwise it is fighting with one hand tied behind its back. It is designed to maintain any set temperature so having the aircon compressor running is as important to keep the saloon cool as the heated coolant is to keep it warm. It has an eco mode which it will use to have the system tick over so that the incoming air will be dehumidified in moderate temperature settings but when that heat hits you in the summer it will crank it up to full A/C and set back as soon as it is able. I can show you pdfs if you like.
We have no Eco Mode on A/C. Another nice feature missing for US CX-5!

Thanks for the pdf files as always! (cool)

Automatic Climate Control is a wonderful feature in high end cars but it so often gets misused. If I could sum it up by saying that as the name suggests, it is automatic, then this quite sophisticated and powerful computer will do everything for you - regulate temperature (up and down), shift the direction of airflow (it will base the screen if the wipers are working, keep your feet warm if the outside temp is low and provide chilled but not freezing air to your face on a hot day), it will use the compressor as needed - everything!!!!

You only have to give it one simple instruction - AUTO. If you press anything else you will over ride it. If you press A/C it will only add A/C to whatever was previously selected. Once you press auto, the only adjustment that won’t deselect all these auto functions are the temperature selections.

do.......

It is really a very intuitive system. One feature I like is that cool air comes in from the upper vents to refresh the air in the car while the heat blows on the feet and rises throughout the cockpit.

Just set it and forget it.

Mine hasn’t blasted me with cold air set to auto. It doesn’t ramp the fan up until the engine is sufficiently warm to at least make the air warm. My Focus basically does the same thing. Love Auto!

Yours is broken.

Or it’s not still in auto if you change anything it goes out of auto. You need to push the auto button again to re enable it.

Agreed. Or off then auto. The only time you should get a rush of cold air through the face vents is on a really hot day.

I'm afraid I have to agree with yrwei. If my system is on auto, when starting up in this cold weather the AC is on and then the fan ramps up to almost full blast. I guess it is trying to warm up the interior but doesn't recognize the engine is not up to temp yet. Why the AC is on when on auto, I cannot figure that one out. I then have to press the AC button to turn the AC off, but the fan speed is still running 90 to nothing. I waited until the car was up to temp and then switched back to auto mode, but the fan still wanted to run full speed. If anyone can tell me why this is, would be greatly appreciated. From my experience so far this winter, the auto climate control is anything but.

Well it shouldn’t do.

Turn the system right off with the off button then turn it on using the auto button. Providing the temp hasn’t beeen set at max hi or low, the fan will start at virtually nothing and only start to climb as the engine temperature begins to climb.

Or you just haven't used Auto in so long you are mistaken by how yours works?

For me auto doesn’t ramp up the fan until the engine is warmed up a bit. I’m in auto like 99% of the time on the Mazda and the Ford. The Ford does let the engine warm up a bit more but the Mazda never blasts cold air when heat is appropriate.

Thanks everyone for the helpful comments. After driving home yesterday and starting the car this morning, most settings were as I left them: AC off, fan speed on medium. I did notice that the mode was in auto, meaning: mode switched from defrost vent to both defrost and feet and then feet only once the engine temp warmed up a few minutes. So it appears that different elements of the climate control system can be 'auto' independently of the other settings. Once any button is changed manually (AC on/off, mode, fan speed) then they must be manually adjusted until the system is reset by turning it off and pressing the Auto On, at which time all systems become Auto again.

Anchorman and Puyapim, my experience has been that the fan speed, when on Auto and in the cold temps here in KC, wants to run at near full speed for some reason. This is even after the engine is up to temp and the temp dial set to 76, so not overly aggressive on the temp setting.. I'll do some further experimentation with the system as a whole, but for now my best results are with setting the fan speed manually and making sure the AC is off.

It sounds like you hit the windshield defrost button since it’s cold there. The fans do spin up really fast when that is on.

The fast fan speed is with simply turning the system off and pressing the Auto On button to turn the system on. No other button presses.
