It's been spied in numerous guises, including sedan and Avant body styles, and though we've known what it would look like for some time, the official facts and figures have been released today. Audi has cast the S4 and its Avant variant as competitors to the mid-size sedan performance throne, but it's the forthcoming RS4 that will truly by the company's entry into the segment.

The S4, however, is no slouch. Its supercharged, direct-injected 3.0L V6 engine generates an impressive 333hp (245kW), about 10% more than the claimed power of BMW's twin-turbo inline-six unit found in the 335i. However, it falls well short of the 404hp (301kW) of the M3, and it is no competition at all for the C63 AMG from Mercedes, rated at 451hp (338kW). Both of those cars, however, feature V8s.

The S4 isn't, then, a natural competitor to the M3 or C63 AMG, but Audi nevertheless casts it as such. Acceleration figures of 0-62mph (100km/h) in 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 155mph (250km/h) make for impressive reading, but they fall short of the competition by about a half-second. Still, like all Audis, it's a competent machine, and its small-displacement, forced-induction approach ends up producing fuel efficiency figures the other Germans can only dream of: 24.25mpg US (9.7L/100km) in the combined cycle. Quattro AWD is another advantage against the RWD-only M3 and C63 AMG, though the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox merely keeps it shoulder-to-shoulder with its equally high-tech country mates.

A new feature for the new S4 is an active differential with driver-selectable settings. The basic function is to reduce steering force necessary when turning (AWD cars have long had an issue with heavy steering in turns) by adding a superposition gear. The high-tech configuration uses an oil bath, multidisk clutch and an electro-hydraulic actuator to run the show, allowing almost the entire torque to be diverted to either wheel on a given axle. Computer control ensures the car can respond to changes in road condition within 100ms.

The driver-selectable features of the Audi 'drive select' dynamics system changes the throttle response, shift-points and speed-sensitive steering behavior to allow the car to be as tame or as sharp as the driver desires. Three basic modes - comfort, auto and dynamic - are built into every S4 with the drive select system. Cars also equipped with the MMI system can have a fourth setting that is driver-programmable. The drive select system can only be fitted to cars that also feature one or more of the following: adaptive control shock absorbers, dynamic steering or the sport differential.

Finally, the new S4 and S4 Avant get a new look to stealthily enhance the good looks of the standard A4 without the flamboyant additions some high-performance sedan variants are prone to. Eighteen-inch S-design alloys, new front, side and rear aprons, plus a sleek spoiler and a quad-exit exhaust are the primary exterior touches. Inside, the S4 emblem reminds occupants of the car's performance-oriented nature, while electric lumbar supports and adjustable thigh supports offer the secure seating necessary when exploring the car's limits. The standard interior scheme is black material with brushed aluminum, but carbon fiber or birchwood inlays can be had optionally. A further range of high-tech options, including adaptive cruise control, Bang & Olfusen sound and a choice of two navigation systems round out the S4's luxury-sport package.

The car will begin delivery in March 2009.

Article is kind of silly. S4 is supposed to compete with the 335, RS4 is supposed to compete with the M3.

Man, that is so bland looking but I still like it. I think BMW's 335is will no have a major problem taking on the new S4.

Supercharged 2010 Audi S4 Sedan Starts From $45,900

Price cuts are the name of the game this year as carmakers fight to keep or gain market share in a highly compressed sales atmosphere. Audi in particular is fighting hard to remain competitive, today releasing pricing for the 2010 S4, A5 Cabrio and S5 Cabrio.

The S4 gets a major price drop, going from a base price of over $57,000 to the 2010 model's starting price of $45,900. Audi says it has repositioned the car "to be more attainable without compromises in performance or features." The huge price gap is thanks in part to the substitution of a supercharged V-6 for the 4.2-liter V-8 found in the old model.

It's certainly been repositioned, and with the updated third-gen MMI interface, SIRIUS traffic information for the nav system and voice-based input features, Audi makes a strong argument for features, too. It will need all it can muster, however, since it's now going heads-up against the highly successful and very competent BMW 335i.

Rated at 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, the S4's 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 engine is right on par for the segment, letting it dash to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds. The supercharger also lets the S4 move around with increased efficiency, snagging 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, a major improvement over the 2008 model's V8 engine, rated at 13/20 mpg.

Pricing for the S tronic S4 sedan starts at $47,300. The new S4 will be available in the U.S. at the end of August.

Also priced today, the Audi A5 Cabrio starts at $42,000 for the manual-equipped front-wheel-drive version or $44,100 for the Tiptronic quattro. The sportier S5 Cabrio is only available with the S tronic transmission and starts from $58,250.

Audi's introduction of the A5 and S5 Cabrios marks the replacement of the A4 and S4 Cabrios, and an expansion of the U.S. A5 lineup. The A5 Cabrio will be available in the U.S. sometime this fall, but the S5 cabrio will join the S4 Stateside in late August.

I like the wagon. The headlights and tailights look sick. I like. But those cars are too expensive for my wallet.

i want the Avant so badly!! I wonder if Canada will get them. If so, could i get it into the states?

I hate to say it but, I would trade in my Mazda 6 wagon for an Avant any time...However, it's hard to let go of my car since they stop producing it now, or I should say they don't sell wagons here in the US...
