Attmpt Oil Change

:
2002 Red Protege 5
Ok, I'm going to attempt my first oil change on this car. I've already got the strap wrench...I'll have to jack the car up and put it on blocks though because the darn thing is so low to the ground I can't even fit under the car to reach the filter. I don't know why they don't put the filter so you can reach it from the top, but anyways, I'll let you guys know later how it went.

Keep in mind that changing the oil should take around 30 min. It'll probably take me 2 hours to do it on this p.o.s. LOL, thanks gorilla man filter guy.

Good luck with the change. I remember my first oil change on the P5.....ahhhhh the memories. Man did it suck!!!!

heh, i did my 1st oil change last month, and that did suck, i couldn't get off that filter atall, i had to take it to a shop, and have a friend pull that sucker off, heh. I guess Mazda does that on purpose so you think you have to take it to the dealership. Sneaky, Sneaky....

I spent a lot of time looking for the filter. Now that I know where it is - it is no *big deal*. But, yeah, two minutes of good engineering would've put it a better spot!

I'm always going to have my car dealer serviced, that way I have no issues getting warranty work. My parents had to replace the brakes on their car cause some axle grease got on them, since they went to a few oil shops, the dealer refused to cover it. I don't feel like going through the same hassle.

Now with that being said, if the filter is really stuck on there, you can poke a hole in it with a philips screwdriver (straight through the side of it), and push the screwdriver in and use it as a wrench (won't slip is the idea).

On my 86 Celica I had I ended up breaking 3 oil filter socket like things with an impact wrench. Finally just got a huge ass pair of channel locks and got it off.

band wrench

I actually found a band wrench that fits the mazda P5 oil filter. I picked it up at NAPA Auto Parts. I believe that is a national store. If anyone needs the part number let me know. The wrench works great. Didn't have any problems using it because you can adjust the angle of the handle.
