Just thought that I would let everyone know...
...I wrecked the hell outta my 2002 Mazda Protege5 today. I was travelling through Richmond, to help out a friend, when I noticed that I was about to pass the street he was parked on. I attempted to turn into the narrow street very quickly, and the car did a pretty good job, until I hit a large bump and the brakes.
I have ALWAYS been told never to brake in a turn, especially with a FWD car. For some reason, that didn't register here, and when I hit the bump, the car went airborne momentarily and lost traction. My wheels remained turned hard right, however when the car re-touched the ground, it continued to move in a straight path. DAMMIT.
I impacted a curb at roughly 25 miles per hour, and immediately destroyed the wheel. It hit so hard that the wheel was shot out of alignment and into the fender, denting and bending it. The side skirt was ripped off, and the metal kickpanel somehow bent up behind the tire. The steering support column was impacted so hard that it was completely bent and cracked, and now it resembles a cinnamon twist. The shocks and coilovers are at an incredible angle, and a depressing one at that. The tire was blown, and the metal of the kickpanel now rides the tire just right so that when the car is moved, the metal peels the rubber from the tire kinda like skin off an orange.
Overall, I don't know what to say, save that I started crying and screaming like a 2-year old. To my friends, it didn't seem like much, but to me, it was a complete loss. So much needs to be fixed, I don't know what to say. I can say that I won't be driving her for awhile, and that the cop who showed up was a great guy. He called my Mazda roadside assistance people, and attempted to console me...he also didn't issue me a ticket, although I prolly deserved one. In one last note, I can't believe I was that stupid...I should have just pulled over, and everything would have been alright....
...I am a complete moron.(I hope the MP5 forgives me)
