Attempted to push start, bad stuff happened

I left my lights on and my battery died. Coming from less advanced cars, I tried to pop start it and didn't turn over. I then got a jump and within minutes of driving my engine light came on and the idle is bobbing from 700 to 2000 and jerks while driving. I drove enough to charge the battery and came home. I read the manual and it said never to push start it causing emission damage.

I parked and unplugged the battery if that will fix anything. Anyone know what is "damaged" or is this just a stealership ploy?

I can't see what could have been damaged from this, unless you have the stock motor mount and the jerking action from the push start pulled something loose or possibly made contact with the firewall.

If the CEL doesn't go away after reconnecting the battery, I would take it to the dealer and not mention the push start.

I think the catalytic converter can get damaged by push starting.
I don't think the push start did anything to your car. It was probably the jump. My cousin jump started his BMW with his friend a few years ago. The next day, the car started to accelarate by itself and the RPMs were erradict at idle. A trip to the stealership revealed a fried TPS. I believe they told him to disconnect the alternator before a jump.

well for future reference, I reattached the battery after letting it sit overnight. I started it up and drove it around and no engine light came on. As far as I can tell its fine now, but maybe reading into it a little it seems to drop revs a quicker between shifts, maybe not. Ill update this thread if something comes up.

I have had to push statt mine a few times, never an issue here. I always seem to leave something on !!

You did not cause any damages from push starting it.
Especially not "Emissions Related" damages.....What a crock....LOL!

Its hard to say whats causing your funky idle..but I would say its not Emissions related at all.
