Anyone use more than 87 octane gas?

My wife runs it on 87, as she is the primary driver...every now and then when I fill it up for her, I will throw in 89 or 93 depending on how empty the tank is. I notice the car runs smoothly regardless.

87 vs 91

You do realize that an engine designed to run on 91 octane will over time deteriorate at a much much more rapid rate if you are using anything less than 91 octane. Also even if you were to have a program installed on the engines computer to handle 87 octane it would still destroy the engine. This is true because the mechanical design and flow of the engine (which by the way is NOT controlled by the computer) is made to have a much more powerful explosion in the head, which won't throw the pistons as hard so what ever balance that 91 octane keep in the engine you have now just thrown it out.

Mazda recommends 87 for the CX-9, so I'm not getting your point.

I always put 91 or higher in my C6 Corvette.

eh i fill up with 89 every time
purely because in Nebraska and Iowa the 89 with 10% Ethanol is in the range of 10-20 cents cheaper then 87

our 9 knocks on 87 octane, and not on 92. I haven't tried 89, so I'll probably try a tank of 89 on the next fill up and see if it knocks or not. If it does, then 92 it is.

Here in CO i use 85 without issue. Because of high altitude it is the same as 87 elsewhere.
