Anyone notice this forum running slow?

I've noticed off and on for the last week or so that this forum is loading real slow...i ran a speed test on my cable modem, and its actually running higher than average...www.msn.com takes about all of 1 second to load, as do other webpages...just didnt know if anyone else was having the same problem

yeah....just on and off though, its actually faster at home on my dsl than at the office on the T1....

I post on "longest thread" a lot and the speed at which that thread moves requires a fast forum, it has been horrible, especially trying to keep the conversation flowing, it takes too long to reload, and by the time you read what others have posted, your replies are about 5 replies back, and they dont make any sense....

I noticed the site going slow a lot sometimes, but like mp3wannabe said, it's just on and off. Sometimes it gets me mad, cause it'll take like 2 minutes to load! I guess just spikes in the server...

It's the forum's server. Depending upon how large the SQL database is for the forum and the machine they have it on, you'll get some slow load times. Especially if the box is used by other sites that run multimedia or other forums.

To give you an indication, I once ran a VBulletin message board that had about 8700 members and the forum database was about a gig. Unless you've got a good processor (2ghz+) and about a gig of RAM during peak hours it's going to load slow.

you guys don't have a clue what slow it....try doing all this with a 26.4 dialup connection! lol now THAT is slow! even when the board is at its peek.

btw....this doesn't belong in the P5 forum....

sir nuke please quit moving posts all over the place...the reason we post in here is because we pretty much know everyone and people respond here...when you move posts to other less frequented forums, often you dont get any responses at all or very little compared to when they are in here...if someone wants to ask fellow p5ers what they think of their rims or whatever, lighten up and just leave it in this forum...its not killing anyone

maybe its the moving of threads that makes this forum sooo sloow (dunno)

This site runs a...

Dedicated Server

Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz
1024 MB RAM
60 GB HD
500 GB Data Transfer

should be in help/feedback forum..and moving there...

Here's some info. If someone has REAL, PROVEN instructions on how to optimize for speed, I am open to suggestions.
Otherwise, spare me the short-sighted comments or half-assed remarks or I will get VERY upset.

The database is over 3 gigs. We have a 2.4 with a gig of ram. CPU load right now is 0.26, 0.59, 0.57.

It's much easier to do a search when everything is in it's proper location.

Also, when browsing, try clicking on "view today's active threads" instead of the p5 forum. Because users carelessly post in the wrong forums, you'll probably find more that you can relate to.;)

Maybe it's the hd. Are you guys running a scsi drive? What type of line is the server running on, T1 - T3? Also 1000mbs fiber gigabit nics are helpful.

well I checked my mail today (hadn't for a few days) and I got about 400 "too many connections" emails from the forum. so I think that might be the problem.
you would laugh at how many errors I get when the DB server is down, like 20 emails per second. like now, for example, I had to restart the DB server. and let's see how many emails... *drumroll* (waiting for effin email client).. 226 emails.

I was just going to post how the site has been painfully slow during the day lately.. i don't notice it as much when i'm on the site at night time..

are you guys doing any kind of database backup during the day? that may also slow things down.. if so reschedule it for the middle of the night (granted we have international users, but we should be able to find some time period that is the slowest traffic wise)..

if it's more server power or more uplink bandwidth needed, i'm willing to donate again to help out towards costs and would hope that others would do the same..

I am quite certain the pipe is not the problem. Let's see how it fares with a higher max_connections on mysql.
