Anyone make the switch from MSP to Miata?

I'm thinking of selling my Mazdaspeed Protege for an NA Miata because it's cheaper and sounds more reliable/less finicky... well, mainly because I've been caught up in the "ultimate fun" hype.

So if anyone's done it, or have owned both cars, what is your opinion? Does the handling and fun...ness of the NA make up for the loss of power when going from an MSP?

As a daily, I'd take the MSP any day (partially cuz I've got 550#/in springs on the Miata lol), but as far as a cheap, reliable super awesome fun mobile, the Miata is tops. I've autocrossed both (MSP on R's and Miata on streets) and as fun as the MSP is power wise, the Miata is just stupid fun :D

I switched from msp to a 2001 se miata....love it. i think it is more fun to drive. lately have been yearning for turbo though. now that i have a better job i may try to get a msm

as a matter of fact i think i saw you once on orange ave near hunters creek. I had a blue msp with black rims and dark tint. near that school by the 417 over pass i think. I used to lived down there

there is one problem with Miadas: highly addictive. This is my first spring in 6 years without a (street) Miada. I'm having serious withdrawls, especially while driving a CRV...

Hmm, maybe I should see about getting Kluge back to street legal status. I wonder if it'll still pass emmisions, lol

Yeah I remember that... that was a while ago. I think I talked to you on the forums about it, too. I don't go to that school anymore, though, I've since moved on to college.

I think some seat time is what I need in order to decide. Want to take me out for a spin sometime? =D

Maybe. I keep tryng ot make it to another autocross around here, but sat night parties keep taking me out. I am also on the look out for a lava orange or black mazdaspeed miata. missed an orange one with 7000 miles on it by one hour.

Test drove a new Miata at the dealership today for the $25 visa card. It was 'Very Nice' /Borat. Really, I can see why people say it's like sitting in a gokart. I haven't driven in an older miata with not so much power, but I imagine I wouldn't miss the power so much. The only concern was that the pedals felt very small, and it took me three tries before I successfully heel-toed from 3rd to 2nd, and the clutch was kind of soft. But I think this has convinced me to go for a used Miata. Now if I could just find an R-package somewhere.

yeah, heel toe's a bit of an issue. There's not really a lot of space and the pedals are a bit far apart. I pretty much have to put my feet like this for it to work: //

P5 to Miata.
But here's the catch...
Non-turbo to Turbo'd 1.6.
I love it.

MSP to 06 miata... while i lost functionality and people carry factors, the fun and "wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" make up for it

i'm going from a Pro ES to an NA (picking it up tomorrow), so i don't think i'll feel like i'm missing out on any power.

now, after hopping out of the CX-7.... ;)

Oh yeah. I picked up my 94 R-package 2 weeks ago... It's red and it only has (had) 33k miles! I'm loving it so far - top down and light weight makes up for the (negligible?) power difference of the MSP. My Gainesville -> Orlando trip was an hour longer last time because I went through the Ocala National Forest. Gonna try another road tomorrow when I go back up.

Congrats on the car! Sounds like you picked up a beauty. The power to weight ratio makes up a huge difference with the Miata, espeically when powered by a 1.8L. If you don't mind me asking, for how much did you take home the car?

Oh yeah, welcome to the habit :D.

jersey_emt went from MSP to MSM :D

Indeed I did. After I rolled my MSP 5 times down the Garden State Parkway and into a tree, I did the responsible thing and got a tiny convertible!

I admit, there are times I miss the MSP, but that basically disappears whenever I hop in the Miata.

You're kinda cheating, though, since the MSM is a faster car. =P

(rofl) that's hot (rlaugh)

Had two 03' Black Mica MSP's with nothing but problems. Picked up my 90' NA for the track, and bought an 06' Mazda 3 five door Touring for my daily. No thanks to a dumb bimbo in a H2 not being able to multi task... I'm now minus my 3.

But that's not soo bad. Now it just gives me an excuse to make my miatar a daily.(nana)
