Anyone knows the TINT laws in Vancouver, BC?

As has been stated before quite enough times but i'll break it down to be real simple:
NO TINT ON
-Windshield
-Driver side window
-Passenger side window

TINT ALLOWED ON (down to minimum % depending on local laws)
-Rear passenger window(s)
-Rear view window

As far as the Vancouver area and tinting on front windows I know cops personally who let people off for it but they say that there is an absolute zero tolerance for any sort of tinting on the actual windshield, they will throw the book at you. If you tint your driver and passenger side windows you take a chance but you are more likely to get ticketed in Vancouver City than in any other district in the GVRD or Fraser Valley because the VPD has been specifically trained to look for illegal mods on cars.

In short: If you car is scraping the road, sounds like an F1 because you removed the cat, has limo tint on every window, and is sending out bass that you can hear in China then expect to get pulled over and fined to the max. Otherwise be discreet and you will most likely get away with it or a slap on the wrist

BC Motor Vehicle Act - Regulations Sec 7.05 (8)
(8) No person shall drive or operate on a highway a motor vehicle which has affixed to or placed on the windshield or a window any material that reduces the light transmitted through the windshield or window unless the material is affixed to or placed on

(a) the windshield but not more than 75 mm below the top of the windshield,

(b) a side window that is behind the driver, or

(c) the rear window if the motor vehicle is equipped with outside rear view mirrors on the left and right side of the motor vehicle.

(9) If a motor vehicle contains manufactured glass, tinting contained within the glass must meet the minimum light transmittancy requirements under the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

Tint in vancouver

Hey!

I actually tinted my windows when I first got my car in 2008, but I got busted by a cop, you can tint the back windows just not the front. I was handed a ticket but I got the opportunity to get the tint removed, and the police officer forgave my ticket in court.

I asked the cop what the deal was with the front window tinting, and he said it's because the cops can't see the driver and that its a hazard?!?

Hope this helps.

I never do anything that reduces my ability to see or be seen. If the AC works, why tint?

As a cyclist, it is very important that I can make eye contact with drivers. Doing so does not guarantee that the driver sees me and will not do something stupid, but it is a very good indicator. Please don't tint your front windows. A million motorcyclists would probably agree.

I had 5% in the back, and 15% on the front two windows for over 6 years before I had them removed. I had it for over 2 years on a Cavalier, and then for about 4 years on my Sentra. I never had any problems for the first 5 years, and then I started getting hassled. First time was in January '09, and I was driving towards Golden, BC on my way home from Calgary. I got a speeding ticket in the national park, and also got a warning to remove my front tint. Because the national park is in tim-buck-two, the cop said I didn't have to bring the car into the station to proove it was removed...so obviously I left it as is.

Then like a month later I was sitting in a parking lot in cloverdale talking on my phone, and a cop saw me while he was driving by, pulled a u-turn, and gave me a ticket in the parking lot for $109. But he didn't make me get it removed...it was weird. I ended up disputing it as he future-dated the ticket for following day. Needless to say, the ticket was voided without me showing up to court.

Then another month later I got pulled over in Cloverdale again, this time by auxilary cops. I was on my way to work, and I guess I didn't signal into the left turn lane. So the pulled me over, swarmed my car, gave me a verbal warning about no signal/tint, and then let me go.

I still did nothing. But then my car got broken into a few months later. The little hood-rat smashed my front passenger window, so when I got it replaced I didn't bother re-tinting it. Then I eventually had the rest of the tint removed from front drivers window. Oh and I should point out that I usually rolled my windows down when I saw cops, and I always rolled them down when I was getting pulled over.

Well now I've just purchased a 2010 Mazda 3 GS, and I really want to tint the windows. I think it would look so good with the Celestial Blue. That, and I like how it cuts back on the glare in my side-mirrors from headlights at night. So I'm debating whether to just tint the back windows, or to go all out again. I'm a little nervous because my car is already going to be a cop-magnet because of the bright colour. I'm thinking I might just risk it, provided the $109 ticket doesn't have points attached to it. I was looking at the Fines and Penalty Points chart on ICBC's site, and tint is not listed. I can't see why it would carry points, as I don't beleive it to be a traffic violation. But I really need to be sure because I can't risk anymore points. I'm already paying $325 year x 3 years for my points; I don't want that to go up. Can anyone confirm this either way?

I want to tint all my windows... my friends said it's illegal and he got caught 2 times, with $125 fines......
so i wanna ask.. did anyone of ya tint ur front windows? and if u did, did u ever get caught or anyone knows the Laws in Vancouver?

Hello,

Yes! Last month when I was with my friend in Surrey, moving back to his home. We had caught by traffic police. Then he told about this law that "the windshield should not more than 75 mm". I think every law is made for ours safety and security.

Thanks & Regards

I got caught yesterday coming down from Big White just outside of Kelowna. They pulled me over in a "random selection" not because I was speeding or driving erratically, but because I have a yellow MSP which is a heat magnet. Not having anything else to bug me about, after walking around the car and doing the obligatory "sniff" test for MJ, the cop noticed my passenger side window was was darker than normal and says, "Why do you only have one window tinted? Roll up this window please". I immediately cursed in my head.

After pleading my case and saying I purchased the car that way (I didn't), she asked if i had been pulled over before because of the tint, I said no, and gave me a notice to remove the tint within 30 days. She also stated that failure to comply will result in up to a $600 fine if caught again as I would be placed on "the list". (pissed)

Just a heads up on this topic...

The law states that a "manufactured glass" that contains tint is legal (so long as it complies with CMVSS regulations on minimum transparency). This doesn't say anything about a factory/manufacturer installed glass, it simply refers to a "manufactured glass". You should be able to legally install a new window that has the tinting material within the glass.

As long as it's legal to have tinted glass, the arguments against tinted films don't hold any water.

And the arguments regarding tint preventing "eye contact" seem to point to the fact that they'd like to make sunglasses illegal.
