Anyone know anything about Autroncs or their products?

assuming they can program the crank/cam trigger sensors for you, then there is no reason why this (or any other stand alone) wouldn't work.
Well..I know I will have to use almost all of their Brand Specific sensors If I want to make it run the best..I have been doing a bit of research and these seem to be very nice units for other cars like the Evo and Have Exceleent results.
I may just have to go with this instead of my other options.

Really..No input huh.
After reading over their site..I dont see any reason why this wont work..and most likely work very well.
I am going to talk to the shop on monday about pricing for these.

I'm sure they're not cheap considering their features.
I think the SM4 would be nic to work with.

if you want something feature rich, and not have to reinvent the wheel by trying to figure out how to make it all work - Haltech E6X...

Autronic are popular in australia - but nowhere near as popular as other units...

Everyone says this works..But I dont see any how to's or threads pertaining to installing these.
I mean..I have been trying to get some info for months now on what EMS works and works well..with no input really from anyone.
Problem with going with the Haltech is no local support...Autronics has local suport.
And what do I have to reinvent..Anything that applies to any other Stand alone EMS should pretty much apply here.
My main concern is controlling the Alternator.
I dont see any other problem if I rewire the entire engine for whatever EMS I go with and use the proper sensors.

you shouldn't need to use after market sensors - no other unit forces you to do so

The altenator control stays in the hands of the stock ecu

you run the stock ecu and after market ecu in parallel, after market controlling fuel and timing (and a few other odds and ends) and stock ecu looking after pretty much everything else.

Besides the alternator..What else does the ECU run....I may take all of the original controls out. I dont see what else the ECU controls...Gauges are likely going by the wayside for a complete aftermarket setup...So what else is there?

idle control and idle up (although most after market systems can manage this, with varying degrees of success), but mainly alt and gauges... can't think of anything else off the top of my head

Oh no..The Autronic Takes care of all idle control, cold starts and is fully adjustable.
I am planning on doing a Fully custom Gauge Panel and If I have to....I can easily convert the Alternator to something Externally controlled by having a simple bracket made/machined locally to mount the new unit.
I was alreay considering a new Ford 100A unit anyway since ours are kind of on the weak side even at the stock loads.

see, custom gauge panel and alternator fix up sounds like a whole bunch more expense, when running the thing in parallel with the existing ecu, and using something which lots of people have had success with would make more sense

hats off for trying something different, but cost benefit doesn't add up for me.....

Well..The gauges have been something I have been thingking about doing for a long time...and the alternators in the Proteges suck frm he factory..but are sufficient. I may not do this ,but its nice to have a plan if the change is needed.
I would be very interested in getting more info from you on running the ECU in parallel to aid in my decision making process.
I will be talking to the Shop on monday about the associated cost of this unit and their success with it.

running in parallel is fairly straight forward... you only cut the bits out of the loom that you need to cut out to get the stand alone operating. Splice the crank sensor so the stock ecu and the after market ecu get to read the signal..and you're cooking with gas...

I'm looking at the SM4. Nearly got it months ago, but wasted my money on turbo parts I can't use until installing new management. I don't know how many times I've said "Stupid emanage! That thing has got to go!" every time it forgets the new rev limit, forgets the new injector size, changes the ignition timing adjustment by itself etc(I caught it in the act the other day while logging. Mongrel thing). Fixing my engine management is next on my list after the exhaust. Anyway Ray Hall here in Cairns is apparently a very good tuner, not cheap, but knows the product very well. A friend of mine has just had an SM4 installed in his R33 Skyline, so I'll catch up with him(not in my car!) and see how it's going.

Hey Sleepy,

Why did you pick the SM4 and not the SM2? I noticed that the SM4 does not yet have the groovy 'auto-tune' feature that the SM2 and SMC have.

Cheers.

"groovy" as in "painful annoying to the tuner, and completely defeats the purpose of getting an ecu in the furst place" feature ;)

i hate those auto tune things
utter nonsense in my book :P
but thats just me :)

Made the call to the shop today....If the price is right and the tuner thinks it will work out well on the protege with my setup...I am going to go for it with this unit.

$2450AUD here, not cheap, but has a good reputation. I hope you do get it, even though you have a different set up, it would be nice not to be completely alone if/when I get mine.

Well..That comes out to $2175 USD..and if thats the case..they are about $700 more than I am willing to spend on a System.
I am hoping to get a much better deal than that.I would pay that to my local shop if that included them assisting with te install, tuning and all associated dyno time for the tune.
We will have to wait and see whan he calls me back.
