Anyone guess what these are???

Insurance won't cover any of this. Its one of those you got to pay to play kind of things. I normally boost around 12psi without problem. The only thing you really need to worry about with the auto is making sure you come into the boost gently incase the tranny downshifts, cause then rpm and boost sky rocket. I didn't do that this time, I usually do, and therefore I have no one to blame but myself. It wasn't the engine, it was me not paying attention. If I could do it over again, I would still turbo my auto. Just make sure you come on the boost gently unless you are already at highway speeds.

Sorry to hear about that. At least the car is well on it's way to being back on the road. I hope you don't get rid of it and move on to another project, it's so unique and you've put so much time and money into it... :)

I'll post pictures of the block later when I go back to the shop. At first I couldn't find the hole, but we put a light in the engine bay, and there is a hole in the front of the block about the size of a small child. Apparently my car gave birth to an entire piston and rod

And JOKA1 (rob) if you are reading this....

can't wait to see the pics

And it wasn't my engine's fault either. The engine was strong, it was my tranny that blew my engine. Basically I pulled out to pass this little old lady doing 10 in a 50 zone, punched the gas, and the auto tranny downshifted into passing gear, my boost and rpm skyrocketed and the engine grenaded.
Sound like you had a boost spike or a bad boost creep problem. Or you had a

faulty WG, deltagates are not the best IMO.

were you pushing 12psi....on a stock P5 tranny...with no sort of tranny mods what so ever??

ur only mods were to the engine....with forged internals??

just wanting to make sure i understand ur set-up right.....

whats the most u pushed the PSI to on the tranny....and did u ever run a 1/4 mile or dyno ur car?

I have regularly been around 12psi, peaks of 16psi. Tranny is auto, but not stock at all, has been fortified with all the right vitamins.

Wasnt wastegate failure or boost creep or anything like that. I replayed the last 30 sec of the cars life on the boost gauge, everything was normal.

One of the problems with the auto tranny, and it was there before I was boosted, is that sometimes if you hammer on the gas, the car downshifts into passing gear. Now before I was boosted that would sometimes drive the rpm to 4500,5000 depending on what speed i was already travelling at. Low speeds are the worst. Now add the turbo and if the car downshifts at a lower speed and your rpm jumps, the turbo spools and just makes it that much worse. When i hit that gas, the car downshifted and it was like i had floored it in neutral, the rpm guage buried itself in the blink of an eye and the engine popped

what th hell is passing gear? lol...when the tranny downshifts...it just drops into a lower gear.....if ur in 3rd gear it will drop to second and so forth.....

unless ur doing very low speed like 20-30mph the it may drop from 3rd or 4th...into 1st...but usually it just drops into the previous gear....

I'm assuming that's what he means by passing gear, the next gear down.

Yea if he was going ten the car was most likely in second gear and when he hit the gas it dropped to first but the thing is is the first gear spools quick and that puts a lot of stress on the motor. Therefore kaboom.

I am finding hard to believe that your tranny made you overboost and blow

the motor. Does that SPOOL manifold have the WG flange only on one runner

or the manifold? Even though you have a large load the WG still should have

limited the boost. What i think happened is that the WG is positioned in a

very bad spot(limited to only one runner) thus creating a bad boost creep

situation.

is a possibility. I know i was doing around 30km/hr when i punched it and the car downshifted into a lower gear. It was literally over in around 1-2 seconds. Another problem my shop reminded me of, is when i first started building the engine, i was never planning on turbo'ing, so when i went forged, i went high compression for a NA build. Never did swap those pistons out for some lower ones. They were surprised I lasted 3 years on the engine. We all had a beer and a good laugh over it. What can you do??

But its all good, my new engine arrived this afternoon. I'll be up and running by tomorrow or weds. Now i have to order forged parts all over again.

Damn, just saw this. Sorry to hear about the engine blowing but glad to see you aren't scrapping it!!

dude, that sucks.

with that said, I am laughing at this:

good luck with the swap.. so you are planning on turboing it again but with lower compression as i understand?

did you brake all four pistons? coz if not, just replaced the ones that blew

and be more careful next time
good luck dude

Thats too bad Paul, but I am sure your car will only be badder and better now. 300whp here you come.

I was checking out the Mazda 5's on the weekend, looks like it could be an interesting project vehicle. I'm getting a little tired of the P5. Might be time for Bigwoofer2.0

I've never heard of someone just replacing one piston. At the very least you'll have to hone the cylinders to be sure that no damage has happened. But good luck with the rebuild either way.
