I have the Linksys BEFSR41 Cable/DSL Router with 4 Port Switch. Just wondering if this has a built in firewall?

But before cloning each packet ... it checks for viruses and spam... just like the power of AOL!!!!

no it actually takes incoming packets, makes clones for each machine on the network and alters the destination

it's like an evil hub meant to confuse yuor megahurtz

Router = Firewall! They usually rule with an implicit deny. You have to tell it which ip addresses to deny or you can tell it which to allow. Depends on how you set it up.

Router = Physical firewall. It's wise to have both a physical and a software firewall. I am behind my Linksys router (and switch but that doesn't matter) and WinXP Pro SP2 and ZoneAlarm. Even then I still monitor my packets randomly to keep an eye on things.

Umm...not quite. A router simply routes packets. Yes you can tell it what to IPs, subnets, or ports to allow or deny, but that's more in line with firewall features that it may/maynot have built in. A router in the purest sense is not a firewall. See here for more details...

Yes I agree it's good to have both a router with firewall features and a software firewall (i.e. ZoneAlarm) installed.

correct, routers and firewalls are very different

A router controls the directions of packets, you can setup access list and such but its still not considered a firewall its just a deterent. A firewall controls what ports, packets, IP's, network etc that can be routed between networks, interfaces depending on what you are using.

router = router
firewall = router + firewall typically

That router does not have a built in firewall and NAT is not a firewall either it is a method of renaming private IP's to legal IP's. It gives hackers one more thing to go around but it certinally wont stop them.

As already said get firewall software to install on your PC :)
