anyone ever try painting the stock grill?

I dont think u can take off that top part.
I used Dupli-color. I didnt find one for protege so i used the ford silver cuz
ford=mazda. It wasnt exact but it was pretty close (could be cuz of fading or it is plastic) The Pros of mine are cheap and the pride in doing it yourself. Cons-I did it and i was rushed cuz i had to get it back on to go to work, lol.
It really is just a grill, you can always redo it, and no one is gonna walk up and inspect every sq. inch of the grill, and say "omg, this is one shade off" or "hahaha there is a fingerprint here" And if they do they deserve to get hit!

Thanks. Do you know where I can find closely but maybe not exactly colour-matched paint for classic red? I could use paintscratch.com but that is expensive even before shipping?

doing the grille is easy, keeping it from chipping is hard. if you put on a clear coat it helps somewhat. i am thinking of getting it done professionally.

you can take the top part of the grille off. I DO NOT RECCOMEND THIS! just tape over it.

it chips with normal wear and tear. i powerwashed mine a few times and it didnt come off. make sure you clear coat it like a b****! its really hard to clear coat in those tiny hard to reach areas.
here is a pic up close. you cant see the chipping from far away, but if you go up close you can see it. here is a closer pic.
