Any recommendations for replacement key fob?

e-Bay can have them for cheap. Then get a mobile locksmith to program it. Price the fob with them as well.

That sounds great, but looking at ebay all I see are key fob shells/covers, not the actual key fob itself. Is there anywhere else we can get one? Mazda is asking over CDN$300 for them, plus $160 for programming. That's a bit insane.

As for your locksmith comment, indeed they do. I just got off the phone with a local locksmith. They actually offer their own as you say, including programming. First shop offered me a price of $350 for keyfob + programming, which is cheaper than Mazda. Another shop offered even less, but they also told me they need the VIN to be sure. Anyway, this gives me some options. Thanks.

#1 - Yes get an OEM fob ----It would have been easier to decline the sale unless they supplied another key but that ship sailed - as it gets close to $500 to get it replaced and programmed - see if they will wholesale you a new fob and program it free under the circumstances -- They should just replace it or contact the previous owner and see if they have it -- often they do find it once a cars been traded - never know - best of luck
Shop around for the keyfob, Mazdaswag.com seems to have them for around 139 US.
