Any photographers in here?

I like the more cartoony building and the less cartoony car. If I were you, I'd lay a normal layer over the HDR layer and mask it to make the car look more normal and the background more HDR... ish?

I agree, and FunkyBuddha suggested the same. I didn't see anything in Photomatix that would allow me to layer and mask, so I'll need to invest in some photo-editing software.

I like the car and the building in the second, but I'd try to tighten up the highlight you see in the pavement behind the car.

Thanks. I struggled making adjustments to that area. So, once I get my hands on Photoshop later in the month I'll see if I can deal with it better than Photmatix allowed me to.

This is the last HDR photo I did:

Now that's how you do HDR! :)

here's one of mine, thanks to jeff for his input on it:

harsh lighting, so its definitely not what I'd call perfect, but all in all I'm happy with it.

I like the darker version. But still..these were probably one raw files instead of the normal 3 or 5 exposures. there's excessive noise in both photos.
it is 3 exposures, and I guess I don't know what you mean by noise. if you're talking about toward the back of the car, thats water... so its not the pic, its real.

nate, I'm not a fan of the sharpening... makes it look plasticy.

Maybe not the sharpening but the brightening of the lowlight areas? (naughty)

I like the darker mood of my version better, with the streaking on the walls (which the HDR actually enhanced a LOT) I just liked how it came out. Obviously subjective.. but that was my preference. I have about 3 different HDR processings of that shot, and thats the one I like.

you took the "moodiness" out of both of those photos... my personal preference in both is that the moodiness enhanced the overall image. If you take that away, it's just a cracked out HDR photo of a car.

yay, I'm not the only one! lol

"Proper" exposure from a technical aspect has its place, but (in my ignorant and relativley unskilled opinion) the best pics come out of a calculated percentage of bending and breaking 'the rules'.

Well, the rules are there for a reason. The reason is that 95% of the time, following them is going to make your photo turn out better. That's why you must know the rules before you break them, and most of the time, follow them.

Was playing around on the 4th of July before the fireworks.
My friends' daughter was playing around when I was trying to take a picture of her. Everytime I would point the camera at her, she would hide her face until I took the shot and the flash went off. Then she would pop her head up and laugh. So, I had to do the process of burning one to make her pop her head up and laugh, then I would take the real picture. This picture, I just sat...and waited for her to open her eyes and BAM!

Hmm, well maybe I should have stopped with the one I enhanced for FlyinHawaiian. IMHO that's how a successful HDR is supposed to look. Simultaneously shows a lot of color and detail in the sky as well as the dark areas. The "dark" version loses a lot of detail in the low-light areas that HDR is supposed to enhance.
