I'm going to be in NYC again in May for 5 days! Woot! Stay tuned for some up coming killer shots. I have an idea of what NYC is like now. I'm gonna take it all in 50mm.

Tomorrow I am shooting a boy scouts clay shooting tournament. Does that count?

I secretly want a fisheye lens, even though I probably wouldn't often use it... for cityscape shots, I really like it.

Ok question time for you guys (probably a stupid question):

With an SLR, you are essentially looking through the lens and seeing exactly what the sensor should be seeing. How come what you see in the view finder isnt always how the picture turns out in terms of DOF? So when you look through a lens at f1.8, how come you do not see the background completely blurry through the viewfinder, but the sensor sees it that way?

On your SLR, there's should be a DOF preview button. It will give you a preview of your DOF and aperture before you snap the picture. You're going to have to get used to it at first, but on cameras with big viewfinders, it's way easier. What camera you got?

Just to add a bit, the aperture is wide open when you don't have that button pushed (on my cam its on the lower left part of the body next to the lens), so that its easier to see what you're shooting. when you push that, it should get darker.

I have a Nikon d40, so no DOF button. I was just curious when using a fast lens wide-open, you do not see the out of focus area the same as the photo actually turns out, even though you are looking through the same lens and aperture setting. I may be confusing the subject.

Weird...maybe it's the way the camera was made? On mine, i see what's in and out of focus. Even w/o pressing the DOF button.

What focal length and what aperture?

35mm f1.8

Its not that I dont see what in an out of focus, its just that what i see isnt the same as what the camera captures. Im gonna mess with some more when I get home. Maybe i am just being paranoid.

Ya..your viewfinder is not very accurate. It's also not 100% crop, etc etc.
