can anyone recommend a good amateur (cheap) flash?

How about something used? Also, what system (Nikon, Canon, other) do you shoot and how do you want to use (on camera, off camera) the flash?

While manual on-camera flash might teach you something about taking good pictures, I think after a very short time you'd actually experience the flash getting in the way of good pictures. Flashes are very sensitive to distance and modern TTL flashes which communicate with the camera body are really the way to go in all but the most planned static situations (i.e. still life).

On the other hand, if you are mainly going to be using the flash off-camera using a remote trigger then the control will be manual, whether the flash is designed for your camera body or not. In this case get the cheapest reliable flash unit you can.

EDIT: I read David Hobby's blog (strobist.com) daily and really like the kits MPEX has put together. Of course, those are really intended to be mainly off-camera kits. If that's your thing then they are an EXCELLENT value.

Good luck.

Well I chose the Sigma 10-20mm, and it arrived today. I just quickly went outside and took these pictures on auto cause I didn't have any shoes on. I need to clean the sensor, I'll probably do that next week. I'll definitely be testing it out soon though.

As I'm sure many of you heard, there was a crane collapse in NYC this past friday. It was on 91st st, my gf lives on 93rd, so we went down to take a look and i took some pics. Pretty crazy stuff, two people confirmed dead, both were construction workers. We didnt get down til a lot of the crane was already cleaned up, but the crane was attached to the building across the street, a bad weld snapped and the crane fell into this building and bounced all the way down. Anyway, here are the pics:

Man am I jealous of those air race pictures! I slipped up and waited 2 weeks after the tickets were released and next thing you know, they were sold out. I was hoping to get a hook-up on getting some seats at a riverfront restaurant but that fell through too. Looks like you had a great time!! Great pictures!

So, I've got a bit of a dilemma: I have $125 to spend at the local camera store and I don't know what to spend it on. I've considered a few options including:
  1. Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens
  2. Good set of tripod legs -OR- a decent ball head
  3. Used flash (to use as a second flash off camera)
  4. Background stand set (2 stands, crossbar, bag)
  5. Bunch of random accessories (Bogen superclamp, 3-way collapsible reflector, Giotto's sensor blower, etc)
So I ask you photographer community: what would you buy with $125?

so Tekkie, What lens were you using on that shoot? I wouldn't of needed to ask but your EXIF is not on the photos. Was it your 70-200 with a TC?? Grest Shots!

Can you list what you have now?
