Is that a Gitzo tripod? How do you like it? It looks like it's fairly versatile.

I must say I like this round of pics better. Are you using the white or gold posterboard for bounce in this setup? I'm guessing the white, because of the sunlight coming from the blinds. Also, I like the depth of field in these better than the first round. A wider field seems to complement the fact that you are shooting macro. I know there are times when isolation is more important, but it seemed too distracting in the other photos. But then again, photography can be so subjective depending on the conceptions the viewer brings to it.

You've got me thinking now. I may go to Walmart and pick up a large sheet of black fabric (velvet maybe) for some portrait work. I own 2 Kino-Flo Diva 200 lights with both sunlight and tungsten bulbs. I keep them in my videographer's work van in case he can rent them when we aren't working together. Maybe I'll bring those home sometime and experiment with them taking pics of my kids.

The tripod is a cheaper Slik Sprint Mini. I got it when I only had a P&S. The legs are three sections and each has three angle settings. The head raises up on an center extension and it has a small ball head. Its stable enough for simple home use, but for field work you really need something bigger and more stable. I need longer legs and maybe a forth section to keep the collapsed size down. I need a larger ball head and a center section with a bullseye level. Aluminum is fine and pads on the upper sections of the legs are nice, too. Gitzo is an excellent brand.

I think I like these two better, as well. I am using standard [white] foamcore board with a peice of posterboard that appears to be painte a light shade of metalic gold. The sunlight is exagerated in the picture of the set-up by the P&S camera. The sun was easily overpowered by the flash. BTW, I didn't have the flash head turned towards the foamcore reflector in the set-up picture, which is why I tried to indicate the direction of the flash [effective light] with the arrows.

I took the last image by reflecting the flash off the foamcore mounted overhead. I used a different peice of posterboard that was a very shiney gold. I figured the more reflective surface would allow me to stop down more resulting in a large depht of field. That plan worked but the resulting light is harsher then I prefer. I think it adds some interest and texture to the flower that make this last image different from the rest.

Sounds like a plan! Setting-up a home studio is fun...just remember to keep it simple so its easy to set-up and take down whenever the opportunity presents itself to take pictures.

hmmm so ur telling me my D70 will remote trigger both the 600 or 800? so really what am i getting for twice the price?

my parents are buying me a 600 for christmas and told me if i'd like i can save my christmas money from my family and just take it to wolf where they bought it and upgrade... but i dont know that its nessicary... i dont know. its a tough decision for me.

The bullseye level is where it's at! I have a cheap Vanguard tripod (given to me) and there have been lots of times where I wished I had the convenience of having the bullseye level on the center section. Maybe one day... after the lenses, flash, filters, bag...

Yes, the D70's built-in flash can control the SB-600 flash remotely. Read more about it here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/ittlslave.htm

I think the SB-600 will probably be sufficient for the vast majority of uses.

As you can see, none of these are digital, I am not a HUGE fan of digital photos. I would much rather work with film.

yeah, I got a few from fishing trips, but there all on film. I think I like this new camera though.

Like in the first pic, in the high-res, you can see the grains of sand floating in the air. its awesome.

Very nice, #2,3,and 4 especially. I also prefer film to digital, but without having a darkroom to use right now, it's more convenient to use the digital camera. So my AE-1 with some nice lenses just sits in my closet for the time being.
