Where is/was Norton AFB, I've never heard of it? Also, were you the sponsor or dependent?

San Bernadino, CA. Nah man, I was just a kid then (19 years ago). My stepfather was Lt.Colonel in JAG. We moved around alot.

Love the air show pics Tekkie! :D

and MSP102...whoever has those two GT2s has one too many...they need to let me take care of one of them. :p The girls look pretty - more subtle - not the overly-made-up stripper look that you see so many times in car chick pics.

werd. Most military move around alot, however officers more than enlisted.

I was lucky, my first assignment was my last assignment (6 years). I had to separate and be my wife's Dependant to move.

Did you know we have the same birthday, no wonder you are so cool.(cricket)

I've decided that I want some new glass for my D50...

I think I want something similar to the Nikon 18-200 but I'm unsure about the price, would this lens from Tamron be a suitable substitute? Basically I'm looking for the "one lens to rule them all". I would use if to take wide angle landscapes and zoom in for a quick wildlife shot or two. one 18-55mm and one 70-300mm cover what I usually shoot, but I am continuously changing between these two lenses.

Is it a good value? I've never heard of them, and I'd rather not get the generic lens if its not even close to the Nikon (I've heard for Nikon).

Id do 2 lenses if you're wanting good quality

Not necessarily those auctions but definitely those lenses. I know it defeats the purpose but having the speed of f/2.8 is very nice and a single lens (18-200) at f/3.5-6.3 will not be fun in low light situations.

If cost is a deciding factor, which it usually is, I'd save my money and get the above lenses.

i just picked up a new lens the other day....too good of a deal to pass up. canon EF 1.4 50mm prime....so far its great! super sharp above 2.8.

I never even looked at the speed of the 2 lenses I have until now... I learn something everyday.

Both of my lenses (the only two I have) must be considered slow. My 18-55 kit lens has a speed of 3.5-5.6 and my 70-300mm has a speed of 4-5.6. I figure I have two ways to think about buying the lens I asked about:

1. I don't know what I'm missing since I'm used to f5.6 and could buy that lens and be happy

2. I don't know what I'm missing since I'm used to f5.6 and should buy a fast lens so I can realize the failings of my two current lenses

I realize I haven't scratched the surface in photography, is there any recommended website that could help me out?

ooOOOHh... great lens! I bought that lens last year and I cannot believe how sharp my portraits are.

I just picked up this bad boy last night:
Canon-EF-70-200mm-f-2.8-L-IS-USM-Lens.jpg

it is amazing so far, and i was only doing test shots around the house. i'm taking it out this weekend.

nice the 70-200 2.8 IS is sweet

my fav lens has to be the canon 24mm 2.8 that thing is super sharp, I think its sharper than my 50 1.4 and 85 1.8, or at least wide open it is :)

As a general rule, you don't "need" f/2.8 or faster. On many subjects that will give a very narrow DoF that may not be desirable. However, better quality lenses are often faster, too. Do you need a better quality lens? Probably not since what you are currently shooting is not super-slow. But look, you really can not go wrong with the 18-200mm...USM + VR-II is a very versatile combination. If you get that lens you won't have to worry about switching lenses all the time...worry about bringing all your lenses with you everywhere you might want to take pictures.

For an amateur you've got a good kit going. I wouldn't make any change in lenses unless it was for the 18-200mm. With that said, if you want to make photography a bigger hobby then anything else in your life...get the Nikon 70-200 USM VR-II (~$1600) and the 17-55 (~$1200). These lenses will last a lifetime of amateur use. Really, you'll never have to spend money on a lens again.

i got a relatively good deal on it. brand new for $1400 off a private seller nearby. Manufactured April 2007.

i bought my 50mm f1.4 for about $250 as well. it can be a tricky lens b/c of the really narrow depth of field. i noticed that while it's great in low light, the very narrow dof at f1.4 to f2.8 will cause things to be out of focus if you are not careful. for example, the focus plane is not constant in group pics, so some people will be in or out of focus. however, it's a great lens nonetheless and it can really get some amazing low light pics with nice dof. i like to use it in a lot of still imagery and one/two person portraits.
