Any photographers in here?

Nice pics, what shutter speed did you use?

On the wider shots (white Civic, for example) around 1/60sec. For the closer shots 1/125 to 1/250. Anything above 200 basically freezes the car. Some pics I have are at 1/320 and the car looks like its not moving at all. While this captures a lot of detail, it does not accuratly convey the action and speed of the subject.

I have shot at the auto-x a few times before with less luck. I just didn't have a good feel for the panning. I did have to deal with tricky lighting this time that switched from fully overcast to fully sunny over the course of two hours.

BTW, your Alaska shots are great. I generally shy away from landscape pictures because I don'thave an appropriatly beautiful subject living in NoVA, but that really is not a problem for you. Keep up the good work.

NVP5White> great pics! i have not yet ventured into the world of taking pictures of moving subjects. i need to practice alot! are you hand holding all of those? or are you panning with a tripod?

All of those are handheld. The pictures where the cars appear larger are really only cropped a little top to bottom; the cars were real close. That's nice for detail, but it means you have to make pretty big movements with the camera.

I don't have a tripod/monopod tall enough to comfortably shoot standing so I just have to follow the cars as closely as I can and try and get into a rhythm. I ended up focusing on the right focus segment indicator in the viewfinder and keeping it on the front tire trusting that the rest of the car would probably be in frame.

nice shots. i like the ferrari symbol shot... although the image could've been improved on if the angle of the side view mirror and the symbol was greater. they're a little too close. nice camera btw... D70 creates some great pics.

lol... yea i know there a little too close.... that happens when the only lense you've got is a 70-300 telephoto. It kinda limits possibilities in small areas like showrooms!

That and there was a nervous salesman over my shoulder for every shot!

lol... yeah for a 70-300 indoors is very tight. a long telephoto zoom like that can create some awesome background blur though.

nice pics. are you using a point and shoot? close up pics would be so much clearer and sharper if you use a macro lens. have you thought about getting a DSLR and a macro lens? you seem to be really interested in photography (looking at your pics on TOprotege.com).

What kind of difference could you expect between a software macro/supermacro and a lens macro?... I have a macro setting on my camera, but it has a fixed lens.
