Any photographers in here?

OK, DOF is what you're talking about. L8R is right, it has to do with your aperture.
... and since it wasn't explicitly stated, larger aperture (smaller number) = less DOF (more background blur / less room for focus error) and smaller aperture (larger number) = more DOF (more of the scene will be in focus).

Here's another example, just because I like the pic (let me know if it's too large and I'll shrink it). IIRC, I was set on auto exposure @ F2.2 (my usual night w/o flash setting).

Santa Monica beach yesterday. New restaurant called Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. opened recently. I though it was an awesome neon sign.

I thought I might include the EXIF for people interested:

Thank you for doing so. I just got my XT last week and I'm loving it. Just been taking pics of the kids with EZ mode. I've played around a little with the advanced modes but evidently not enough yet.

Quick question. I shot some stuff today in RAW format. I'm trying to open them in Photoshop CS 8.0. It will not recognize any of the RAW pics (.CR2 extensions). I've set the "open" format to both Photoshop RAW and also Camera RAW and neither one works. I'm running Mac OS 10.3.9. Any ideas?

Some shots I took today. Not so great and need alot of improvements but I'm getting there.. .:P CRITIQUE ME!
It was taken with Leica D-lux2 in aperture priority f/8.

I think you need to install a plug-in for CS to access the raw. Check the adobe website.

Seeing how some of you guys are experts, I need some help with taking pictures of some items I have to sell on the internet, mainly ebay. I want to give it that professional look (shadows, clear background...). Any suggestions on what software to use ? or any technics of taking close up pix ?

Use photoshop, pretty easy to do with layer blending options to get a relativly professional looking photo in a small amount of time.

You should drape some cloth over a table and backdrop (use a table against a wall and pin the cloth to the wall). it can either be white or black or whatever color, depending on the look you want to achieve. get at least two lamps and shine the object at different angles to achieve your lighting effect. make sure you use some kind of cloth or paper to soften up the light. using a bare bulb will make your object over lit. becareful since the lamps will get hot, don't burn anything. :) Have your camera set on a tripod and adjust white balance and settings for correct exposure.

it's easier to take a good picture first, rather than adjusting alot in Photoshop. Although Photoshop can do wonders if you know how to use it right.

I bought sheets from Goodwill for backdrops.... Havent really used them much.

can I download Photoshop from Limewire ? Is the version 7 pretty decent ?

Can you? Yes.

7 is old, get CS or CS2.

So evidently Photoshop CS doesn't include camera raw support for the Rebel XT - you have to have CS2 to get that support. Oh well I guess I'll be shooting in jpeg for awhile.

Attached is a pic I took tonight around 10:00pm of a palm tree in my back yard. I like the way the moonlight plays on the palm leaves. I know there are many things wrong with this pic - no real focus. Plus I played around with the color levels in CS to get the blue and green to stand out more. Unfortunately the shutter speed allowed too much star blur (I couldn't get the earth to stand still for 25 secs). Oh well. The concept was cool.
