Any opinions on this deal?

The dealer I might buy my car from quoted me $19948 ($300 over invoice) for the following...

Mazda3 S
Auto, Sport pkg, ABS/SAB/SAC pkg, Xenon/TPMS pkg, Moonroof/6-CD pkg, leather

How is this deal? He said he couldn't negotiate anymore than this.

I'm going to be completing my sophomore year in college on May 7. But he said I'm still not eligible for the college grad rebate even though Mazda's website states this...

Not that I wouldn't buy it from him if he didn't give me the discount. Just thought that wasn't right.

Sounds like you qualify for the discount. I'd walk if he didn't give it to you.
$300 over invoice is probably a fair deal, but other dealers are selling for less....

Other dealers might be selling for less, but this guy isn't going to charge me a dealer processing fee, an addendum fee, and he's also not going to charge me to bring the car from another dealer like some other dealers I talked to.

Then you're getting a great deal. You gotta get the rebate, though. That doesn't come out of the dealer's hide, so he should get it for you.

He said I don't qualify for it. That just doesn't make any sense because he didn't even explain why I didn't qualify for it. What should I say to him?

honestly I'd tell him to get bent (moon)... you're starting your junior year in the fall, hence qualifying you for the discount. Again, if he won't give it to you, walk. I'm sure you could find a dealer that would be willing to give it to you. That's insane.

The dealer has no say in this. They need to fill out a form and send it to Mazda to get reimbursed for the rebate if it is applied against the invoice price. You are not a junior yet....you havent even completed your sophomore year. They have to draw the line somewhere. If they give it to you, then why not someone who is just starting their sophomore year.

I'm not sticking up for the dealership or Mazda. I'm just making the point that on paper you do not qualify, and the dealer has no say in this. It sounds like he's doing ok by you anyway.

The reason I felt this was unfair was because even though I'm not technically a junior yet, it's not like I'll be getting my car while I'm a sophomore. The car I want is in transit from Japan for another dealer. He's then going to bring it in from the other dealer and sell it to me. By that time, summer's going to be around and I won't be a sophomore anymore. On paper, I will be a junior.

Yes, it may seem unfair. Did you already sign the invoice? I believe the deal is not official till you take possession.

Also, understand the sales person has no control over this. He is one out of thousands of dealers submitting the rebate form. This money is coming directly from Mazda corporate directly to you.....or to the dealer if they use it to offset the invoice price.

You are also not technically a Junior unless you're enrolled in classes, despite how many credits/hours you have. Unless you enroll in summer courses, then there is that 3 month gap between when you complete your Sophomore year and when you officially become a Junior in the fall. The dealer has no control over the terms of the college rebate. That's something you will have to take up with Mazda USA, but they'll win that argument in your case.
