Anti-Theft Alarm won't disengage when replacing battery (2017 Mazda6)

Hey everyone,

I ran into an issue earlier today while installing a new battery in my 2017 Mazda6 GT and I couldn't find a solution online or in the manual. After wasting about an hour and a half of my time troubleshooting, I was able to find the solution to my problem and I wanted to share it here to save others time in the future.

Problem: When installing a new battery in the car, the alarm started to blare and the anti-theft light would flash rapidly as soon as the terminals were connected. After about 30 seconds, the alarm would stop but the light would continue to flash and the alarm would eventually start up again in a seemingly endless cycle. The only way I could get it to stop completely was by disconnecting the negative terminal from the battery to remove power. Every resource I found said that you needed to push the unlock button on the key, open the trunk, use the request switch on the door, use the physical key to unlock the door, use the unlock button on the inside of the car, or even attempt to start the car with push to start feature. None of these approaches worked for me and the guy from my local Mazda dealership I spoke with on the phone didn't have any advice for me past what I had already tried.

In an attempt to not piss off my neighbors by setting off my car alarm for the 9th time, I decided to pop out the horn fuse and the horn relay (locations can be found on the backside of the fuse panel cover in the engine compartment). After reconnecting the battery and only being greeted with flashing lights and no horn, I was able to take my time and figure out the following:

Solution: When you connect the battery and the Anti-theft system is active, you will see a small module with a blue light flashing rapidly near the gas cap and hood release switches. If you use the "push to start" button in the car to put the vehicle in accessory mode, you will be able to hold down a small button on the underside of the module with the flashing blue light and the system will disengage. From here, you can start the car as you normally would. NOTE: If you try to hold down the button on the module without having the car in accessory mode, nothing will happen and the system will remain engaged. If you took out the horn fuse and relay, make sure to put them back!

Hope this thread will be of use to someone one day because I know it would have helped me lol.
