another tire fitment question & autocross ?

A guy i know is selling a set of 17x7 +45 offset rims with 225/45-17 tires on them.
Im wondering if this setup will fit on a 2001 protege sedan.

Also i want to start autocrossing this car. Would it be better to stick to the stock 16" rims or go up to the 17".

Any help would be appreciated.

Tires are a bit too wide and tall. 215/40/17 or 205/45/17 fits nicely though.
