2011 CX9 GT
Of course in Sept of 2014...and about 2500 miles ago it went out of warranty.

2011 CX9 GT. Smart key has newer batteries mid last year. We only have one key FYI as we bought it used with 9k miles or so.

With that.....The fob works in a literally sense that it will unlock and lock the doors. However it will IMMEDIATELY unlock them. Almost like the fob is still in the car and the safety feature of not locking the keys inside steps in. Even if you pull the key out and try to manually lock the doors WITH THE KEY. It still wont allow them to lock. It acts as though its locking and immediately flicks it back to unlocked.

Thoughts?

I see these smart keys are common issues. I did some searching and did find much. If i missed a thread with information similar to mine I apologize. please post it for me.

I may not be of much help, but I'll ask a few more questions to clarify.
So you can lock and unlock normally from a distance, but when you're close it won't allow the car to lock?

Does it do this only on the driver side or is it every side of the vehicle?

Everything else shows ok? I.e. car runs fine with the key, the little key light on the instrument panel shows green when you turn it on, etc?

It does not work from ANY distance. Up close, far away, even using the key to manual lock the door it will lock...and then immediately unlock. It will actually ONLY keep the drivers door locked.I forgot to put that in the original post. ALL other doors will lock as they should.

To put it in a situation....I step out of car. All doors are unlocked as we just parked. Close all doors. Hit the Key fob and the lights will blink like its locking. Lights attempt to go out inside the car like its trying to lock. You can hear the lock flip to locked, however...it then immediately unlocks the door again. All of the others doors will lock except the drivers door. You can hit it over and over again and it wont lock the drivers door. If you pull the key out and try to manually lock the doors...it attempts to lock it again and then forces it back to unlock.

Hopefully i am explaining this ok. lol

Probably won't work but maybe try resetting the system by disconnecting the car battery for a few minutes. Might be worth a shot.

I will try that tonight. I am a GM guy and that normally is a good "reset" option for minor issues. Thanks

Any remote chance (pardon the pun) that there is a smart key that has been left in the car by the previous owner / car dealer? I would comb the car carefully to see is there is a smart key that has fallen between or under the seats that is causing the problem.

Did this problem just start? Or has it been like this since you bought it?

I also second the "reboot" recommendation.

I thought about there being a key fob somewhere in the car by accident but it happened maybe 5 times last year and we didnt think anything about it. Didnt do it at all the first year or so we owned it. Checked the doors and thought we had one slightly open. Fixed it and it stopped. NOW ITS EVERYTIME lol

Well, I guess the only good thing about it being every time is that if you have to take it to a Mazda dealer, it's repeatable so they can't say you're crazy. But that is interesting it only started doing it regularly now. I liked @scotch3's response until you negated it with the timeline, lol.

Battery reset, fingers crossed. I know a lot of people have issues with these advanced keys when they go wrong, almost always exacerbated by the fact that with 1 key you can't do much. Two is usually the minimum for user-achievable results it seems. Makes me want to get a third one just in case, because with two, you can program a third. (Luckily the second factory key is locked in my safe at home, lol).

And the plot thickens.... Lol. Battery relearn did nothing.

I rolled the drivers window down so I could watch the lock lever on the inside of the door near the inside handle while I tried locking it from outside with the fob. If I hit the key fob lock button and immediatly hold down the actual/physical lock button inside the car it will lock and stay locked. If I don't it attempt to lock and flip back to unlocked. Almost like it's not "catching" to stay locked.

Using the key to manually lock it if I hold the key turned towards lock it will actually catch.

Leads me to think they're is an issue with the handle, lock rod etc

You *may* be able to sweet talk your dealer to pushing Mazda for a courtesy warranty repair, since you noticed the condition started before the warranty was up, but couldn't always replicate it. Worth a shot. Just sweet talk them, and give a lot of "mea culpa" for not bringing it in those few times it happened--"I know, I was dumb for not bringing it by--I just didn't think much of it at the time. Any chance you can get corporate to take care of it?" Worth a shot.

We are going that route...its a bit furthur but we have a friend thats been a service writer at a Ford Dealership for 15 years. He said he will do what he can and try to get it in front of the service manager so he can push it furthur. Warranty was up in early Oct i found last night or 36k. We just turned 39,700 miles this past weekend so not terrible over. Id be happy with even 50% coverage.
