I laugh at how some of the people posting that the rep system sucks are the biggest posters on the reputation points thread. It was a decent system before that thread. Just don't abuse the system and the system works fine. If someone helps you out or gives good info, the leave them good rep. If they detract from the forum and serve no productive purpose, then leave negative rep with a reason (other than something silly like "you are a tool").

I agree with you.
Even though the idea of freely giving positive props is nice, it really shadows the real contributers to the forum. Granted, that thread has gotten so huge that everyone knows what rep points are now and they don't need anymore exposure, but it has just gotten out of hand.

I remember the time before the thread started that if you looked at the people with most reps you'd see members that you could recognize for being all around helpful people and just nice on the forum. Now you look at the top reputation members and you can see people who joined a month ago, have 20 posts to their name, and just whored themselves out in the reputations thread.
It was novel, but I prefer to get reputation for a good post rather than for plainly posting on the reputation thread.

but, the thing is back then, who had the most rep points? it was prob kyle. granted he has lots of useful info, but most is from people thinking he is cool. while others just give neg rep cause they dont agree with someones thoughts on something. beleive me, I was waay flawed even before my rep thread. thats why I made it. I could have thought of people that should have had like 3 green boobs even before my thread. People such as linux, turf, juan, twighlight, etc... But sadly not

I'm pretty sure linux was up there in reps. So was T3ase, pdh, and some others now lost in memory.

The good thing that came out of the rep thread is that people know that the function is there and use it more freely now. Before that thread not many people knew about it - there were previous threads asking "what are rep points", but since they didn't last forever people just didn't see them. Now the Rep thread is always around and always "live", so many people see it, use it, and next time when they see a post they like they give it more freely or just remember that you can do that.

So good came out of it. It's still nice to see comments on a thread, and especially now that we'll have a name tag. But the unfortunate side effect from all of this is that too many people have ridiculous amount of rep points, so it makes it hard to differentiate.

I would like to see the system kept, but all rep points reset!!
