Android Auto View Incoming Message

Sometimes when driving the screen announces an incoming message and asks if I would like to see it. As the touch screen where I could respond is deactivated when the car is in motion how do I see incoming messages on it?

I think this is right:
Use Commander Knob to Joystick UP to select the pop up screen that's announcing the incoming message, then press to select.
If you miss that screen - it goes away on it's own after several seconds - use the knob to toggle DOWN to the bar at the bottom of the screen, then rotate knob to highlight the Bell Reminder icon. Press to hear incoming messages.
