Aluminum Exhausts

I've been wanting to put the car on a diet... anyone have any experience with these? I plan to make an Al catback with no muffler or resonator over the holidays. Hopefully the cat will silence things enough. Seems like an easy and cheap way to drop 20lbs.

Titanium...

It will survive. Aluminium will eventually fail..

If you are worried about it, side pipe it for the track, that will save some weight and free up the spool..

Aluminum behind the cat should be fine. The temps won't be much of an issue. The only thing I see being a problem, is a being sure that vibration isolation is good. With that much length of pipe noise will be toned down some as well. Obviously not as good as a muffler......

Aluminum is cheap enough that I can fabricate years of exhausts before the cost comes close to titanium. I've been thinking about just doing a side pipe, but I think I want the exhaust heat to exit at the bumper. I've managed to melt the rear lip a few times thanks to race gas, flames and just the amount of heat 20mins of boost create... I don't want to start on the sideskirt. Plus it won't leave an empty spot back there and I can use the stock hangers for vibration dampening. The weight penalty is small enough I can live with it.

Make the downpipe go directly down to the road from the turbo...

It will not be that loud. It will not melt s*** and it will be very light..

I don't want to make a downpipe though. Just a catback portion I can swap for trackdays. My buddy has a 4" dump right off his turbo and swears never to make a full exhaust because of the weight :)

I get a wicked boost spike with just the downpipe dumped after the cat, damn internal wastegates.

I don't have any experience with aluminum exhausts, but I have been running with no cat or muffler for about 8 months. It's not too bad for daily driving. Actually I'm convinced most of the big ricer mufflers amplify the exhaust because I've heard MSPs louder than mine with those mufflers.

AN EBC will help the spike..

While any kind of weight savings is nice, If you really wanna put your car on a diet you can feel, You should look at taking weight out of the passenger compartment, higher up on the car, etc... If you can get some weight off the higher sections of the car, you can lower your COG....
