alright - here goes. KL-P5-take2

It was more than that - the oil gauge that I got was a phantom from Autometer - off'a Craigslist.

It had a bit of a temper honestly - it'd work most the time, but every once in awhile - it'd go sweeping wildly and eventually come back to rest at a nominal point.

So that's why - I wasn't sure if it was just acting retarded - or if there truly was an oiling issue. That's why.

FWIW - the oil pump died. Shrapnel in the oil pan from the bearing that went kabloowie!

rebuild underway - chewed up that rod pretty good too - so now to get the crank turned, new forged rods, etc, etc.....

actually I'm taking a bit of a step down due to finances.

I got a good look at the K1's - #5 and #6 are pretty chewed up on the big-end/crank side. That's indicative of a failed oilpump in KL powerplants. The crank is in good shape being that the bearing took the abuse and it didn't make it through to the journal just yet. I also tried to turn the oil pump by hand - and it'd roll over just about 2 or 3 "clicks" but then it would lock and it sounded like stirring a bowl of bolts internally......lol.

Rebuild will consist of Millenia S rods and either Ross or Wiseco forged pistons. ARP2000's will fit on the end of the rods with a bit of flushing. Also looking at polishing the beams to get rid of casting marks and to help balance them all to within 2-3 grams of one another. It's going to be more work on the front-end than just buying another set of K1 H-beams, but I just don't have the coin to drop 600 on a set of rods right now. But I do have the coin to grab a set of Milly-S rods from the salvage yard for 60 bucks and refinish them myself.

Update - got pistons on the way!

A gentleman from another forum is shipping me a set of used Diamond Forged pistons for my KL. These pistons have less than 300 miles on them, so the coating is barely even scuffed on the skirts. I'll have them inspected for flaws or issues - and if all goes well - I'll buy them for 200 bucks. Going Friday to the U-Pick-U-Pull to grab a set of rods from a Millenia S I saw. Then - assemble it back together. New oil pump - check. Took the old one out and looked at the inspection cover on the backside of the pump - holy hell! No wonder stuff went boom-boom....it was trashed!

New build will run 2x the boost (16 psi), have a new MS2 v3.0 unit at the helm of control/standalone ecm. It consists of an open-element GM style IAT sensor that will aid greatly with boost - not to mention the VAF delete so I can now run Speed Density (fcuk a vaf/maf...). PWM IAC valve control with a mod, boost control directly from the board with a solenoid, 2-step/launch control/no-lift-shift, Wideband input from my Innovate LC-1, and the same ol' Aeromotive 1:1 AFPR taking care of fuel pressure.

Almost all parts are here already (minus pistons and rods). Just need time to build it now......looks like I need to make some, eh?

VERY nice, man. Once again, eagerly looking forward to the turn out. :)

tiny victories, right???

Today - I went to the local PUll-A-part and removed a set of these from a 2000 Millenia S:

Diamond Forged pistons should be here soon
MS2 v3.0 is ready for installation (wasted spark, batch bank injection, moderate tune for starters on 14 psi)
I managed to pick up a methanol/water injection kit locally for $140 (2-stage capable....I'll just try to get 1 working initially.....lol)

Now to get rings, bearings, HG/gasket kit, and lastly - assemble and static balance everything. I'll have a local shop here that can balance my rotating assembly for pretty decent pricing. It's coming along.....slowly - but it WILL be running for IFO and ready to see what she's capable of.

I just wanted to get away from the FS platform because of my past luck with them.

Some others have shunned me for not sticking with the 2.0, for they say it's better than going KL, for all the trouble and headache of the swap.

....I don't care. I know my 2.5 (out of the box) has lasted tons longer than either 2.0 I blew up would've. And now it's a fire-breathing-wagon with boost.

Rico - I endorse your message of wanting a v6 in your life. It's worth it in my experience.

The FS is the last Mazda FWD engine id play with. Pretty much every other option is an improvement. There's no reason to really stick with one in all truth. And with that, i say, KL FTW! Keep up the good work. :)

so - I painted the bay today. I was deciding between an aztec blue pearl and gold wash pearl....went blue. I'll shoot gold on the vc's if I don't polish them.

Pistons should be here tomorrow, along with rings and a full gasket set for the motor. I'll pull the crank this weekend - and start building this thing. Got all the wiring out today too.....what a mess!

VC's and IM done:

I think I'll polish the pipe that goes on the IM on teh passenger side. That'll break-up the black a bit. That paint went on like silk and damn near looks like powdercoat! I'm happy!

got the remainder of the rebuild parts in. Full engine gasket set, main bearings, rod bearings, seals, etc.
Got a crank that I'll get a polish job for the journals.
Got all rods cleaned up and new bushings pressed into the small-ends
Got the Diamond pistons all cleaned up. They are used, but with approximately 900 miles on them. They sit well in the crown and fit well in the bore.

Rebuild ... starts ... now.
