alright - here goes. KL-P5-take2

haha i meant track, and really i have. time slips to prove it. This coming season though his 4:1 gears and turbo setup will slaughter me...

I love the looks i get from people trying to figure out where that awesome noise is coming from. Oddly enough a lot of people who have talked/ asked me recognize as a probe gt motor..

Got my new Catalytic Converter and 2.5" to 2.5" splices for welding it into the exhaust in the mail Friday. Today I should receive the O2 bung, new O2 sensor for the rear bank cylinders' header (it snapped....and now I have a hole....), and the new gaskets for the header collectors. The rear one is leaking.

Going to try and weld the bung in with the header still on the car, because taking that thing off.......is damn near impossible without removing the engine. Once I get that all squared away - I'll put the shortshifter in (which should also show up today). Got lots to take care of before the holiday weekend, and with my car getting anywhere from 8-10 mpg at the moment.......that's gonna be an expensive trip to Oklahoma.....lol.

Evan - got the shifter today! Looking forward to getting everything put into the car tonight after work.

Updates to come!

What were your times?

short shifter installed! (didn't get the rest of it done due to scheduling conflicts with the guy I was working on it with)

It's a day and night difference honestly. The shifts are shorter ofcourse, but with the care and addition of a new nylon nut on the bolt at the bottom of the shifter - I've now got a solid feeling shifter that won't back off. That was the issue I was facing with using the lock washer (that didn't lock anymore) and regular nut that was on it OEM.

I go get the kiddos from their mother's house and have them through Sunday. My son hasn't ever really joined me for fabrication (other than for his and my dirtbikes when we were racing), so I hope we get to go tonight. It'll be cool teaching my son how to weld!

Also - found out what the damn clunking was in the passenger rear of the car. Every time I'd hit a bump, take a turn, compress or rebound on that strut - it'll clunk/clank/bang.

Looked lastnight and upon removing the cover (the one that the seatbelt for the passenger comes through) - I saw black dust covering everything in that little compartment. Looking closer - this piece was completely gone (it seems to have broken sometime back and just over time it dissintegrated):

That rubber part on top of the strut mount is completely gone! It's just rattling around in there so no wonder it clunks all the damn time!

Looked for just that part - and I saw the entire strut mount for sale for 8 bucks more than the rubber cap only.....just got the new mount. May as well, eh?

alright - got the work done lastnight.

Gas mileage already is at least double what I was getting.

I now have an exhaust leak now though. The o2 bung wasn't as easily installed as I thought. That header material they used to produce these headers is absolute horse-s***. It's paper-thin and really bad quality metal. While welding it in - I had it set just a tad too hot with the MIG, and burnt thorugh it unfortunately. I got it filled, but it's ooooogly.

Also - got that intermediate shaft re-done. Cut off that 3-hole attaching point on the bearing with the plasma cutter - and made a new one out of 1/4" plate. Ran a gusset up to the spot in which I cut the other plate off, and filled everything else in with filler rod. Looks trick!

Got the catalytic converter welded in too - that was a breeze. Little quieter (better sound indeed), got my torque down off-idle back (spins up plenty fast now), and the exhaust doesn't smell like a refinery......I feel I'm doing my part with the tree-hugger in me also by "cleaning up my exhaust".

only 350 more dollars to go and I'll have my MS-PNP for the KL, then......I just need that 255 fuel pump and the bewst is a go!

Anyone know if the King6 Probe GT crossmember delete with front engine mount could be modified to fit my P5?

The reason I'm asking is simple really - I want to delete the crossmember altogether, that way I do not have to worry about clearances with the turbo piping when the time comes to boost the KL.

I've thought about that too. As you know, the Probe and P5 share a lot of suspension bits but I doubt the engine bays are close enough to be the same dimensions to just bolt up without cutting and welding. Maybe ask that cat (I forgot his name, Darren, maybe?) if he can send you one to use as a prototype to see if it fits? If it does, he'll have some business from boosted P5's.

I'm starting to wonder if I can just make one.

I have plenty of steel at my disposal and a great welding setup.

Get a mount + fab up the crossbrace + end caps to either weld or bolt into the framerails......should be good, yeah?

little update - I've taken a turn in my build.

wheel bearing actually went out going down the road unexpectedly. I heard a rather loud pop, then a whiney-whirrrrrrr and while slowing down to pull over and check it out - boom! On the rotor I was and the wheel was rolling down the shoulder.

No real damage to the car - some paint taken off the control arm, thank god the oil pan wasn't low enough to contact the road either.

Spent the past 2 days putting wheel bearings in the car and getting it back up and running. All done.

With IFO only 3 weeks out and my club trying to get everyone's cars ready - I've now officially gone Megasquirt (MS3 v3.57) - and holy crap this thing came to life! Next is just a few finishing touches on the boost kit (need a better WG, better BOV, a few gaskets, and a oil drain line to go back to the pan). Seems my team/club is pushing me to get it all done - so I'm going to try to have it on at least 8psi by the time IFO rolls around. I may not have much time to re-learn how to launch it though, with hardly any time to get the build done and the tuning finished.

8psi on a stock bottom end 2.5L V6 (which had 179 HP to start with) should put me in the 260-270 range on VP C-16 fuel, on a mild tune. Then - we'll turn the boost up to 12psi and watch the magic happen! Hopefully I can hook...and get some timeslips to record the carnage. Gonna be a fkn blast!

Damn man, sorry to hear that, never seen a bearing fail so quickly. Have you already driven the car since this happened or was the MS before the bearing failed? Just wondering since that's a quick turnaround from sliding on the rotor to full EMS in 2 days.

It's good to have friends! My team has access to a wrecker - so we towed it and got started on it that night.

the MS - that's been a work in progress for awhile now. I have been testing, messing up, resetting, and retesting - then putting the stock ECU back into place for a bit now. Running the stocker just incase something I have done goes haywire on the MS.

Yeah - I've driven the car with the MS in place before the bearing failed.

It's strange - I didn't really hear much noise, or have much vibration. Then - being Houston and it's "horriffic" roads - i hit a pothole on the driver's side and that's the bearing that let loose. Coincidence? I think not....

Now to get this damn thing spooled! I've been working on the turbo setup for way too long now it seems - and it seems there's finally a light at the end of the tunnel.

small update - nothing too fancy.

The team I roll with (The Swapaholix), are all going to invade IFO tomorrow at Royal Purple Raceway, in Baytown TX.

I was asked to clean up the P5 a bit, as they'd be placing it in the mainstream of the show-traffic. I had an idea also.....remember those bronze Mazdaspeed6 wheels I painted? Well - long story short - I will not be painting them with that Wheel Paint anymore, but I will however be using Plasti Dip on them!

Bronze Paint:

Now - a "Highlighter Yellow" plastidip for the show:

My wife walked out and I had just finished up - her exact reaction : "Holy Sh!t those things are bright! How fun!!!!"

Today was a blast! IFO Houston 2013 was in full-swing.

Didn't do anything big for the carshow, but the crew and myself DID bring home 2 1st place trophys:

Sound Competition - 4 door sedan class (won with 149.7 db!)
Overall Team Participation (entries) - Team SwapaHolix!

Pics and vids of today's fun to come!

The wheels look great that color and congrats on the wins!

Houston Streets has a few pics from IFO and of the club cars. Check these 2 out....lol!
