Alpine CDA-7863 Problem...

:
2003.5 White Mazda Protege5
I was hoping someone might know the answer to my problem. I am new to internals of car stereos. I put a CD in my headunit the other day that was cracked and I didn't realize it. Well, I think it got the eye and now my CD's skip every now and then. I was wondering if anyone knows what I might need to replace it? I know it is the eye but does anyone know what the exact piece is called? Maybe the Laser Pickup or the CD Mechanical Assembly? I hope it isn't the Laser Pickup because I am not sure if I can buy one of those. The place that sells Alpine Replacement parts in the USA says that Laser Pickup is discontinued. Anyways, if you know please let me know! Thanks

Umm. I think you have three options...

1) Send the unit away to be repaired by a technician
2) Replace the unit
3) put up with the skipping

What do you mean cracked? I don't see how a CD could screw up the laser. My guess is that you hit a pothole and its out of alignment. In which case you're still screwed because I don't think anyone here has experience with ripping apart head units.

Haha, not true! I'm very good at ripping them apart. I've torn open four or five now. Its getting them to work again that I suck at...

Precisely.

The one time I pulled one apart it was only to get a CD out because the thing was fried and wouldn't even eject. Needless to say, it wasn't a pretty sight.

Alrighty! Thanks for the replies guys. I have opened a few, never wanted to put them back together though! Haha. I am not sure what I will do. And the way that a cracked CD could have hurt the laser is by scratching the eye. So, thanks again.
