All out Double Din Post

So far I've seen a couple of clever installs, and some of the mp3 adapterkits used in P5s, but can we get an.....

all out photo posting of some of you that have taken on the challange of filling up the Double Din space with as much finesse as possible?

Maybe a standard HU with an eq or something squeexed into the space?

I'm looking into some standard double din HeadUnits, but all of the US versions are CD and tape? I don't know about you, but my tape collection is all but non-existent!

The Japanese models are CDw/Mp3 and minidisc (nice!)
anyone successfully using on of these?did the order go ok?

thanks,

How's this?:

Kenwood DPX-8020MD - CD/MP3 CD/ MiniDisc player. Awesome deck - I had it "installed" for like two days - it was for a friend, and I was kinda test-fitting it. I did have to make an adapter ring to fit around it, becuase it didn't fill the entire opening, but it came out pretty nice.

If you're interested in any foreign decks (as in NOT for sale in the US) let me know - I've got an overseas hookup, and I can get them at reasonable prices - the one pictured above goes for about $750 - most others are less.

Here's a Kenwood Australia site: http://www.kenwood.com.au/car2.asp?cid=24&gid=1 - I can get most of these, too, I believe. Let me know if anything strikes your fancy, and I'll see what I can do.

nice.... thanks man...
I'll try to take a look through the models on the link you posted.

Is that a Japanese model there I assume? Also did it happen to have an Aux/ inputs for say a DVD player or video game system..

and also is there any kind of security deterrent on their?
I'm wondering if most of these double-dins have at least a half detachable face or something?
i find it hard to believve that some design team would overlook the fact that their big, shiny, HeadUnit gets installed smack, dab in the middle of the dash in plain view.

I think that deck pictured does have an AUX input (RCAs I believe) - I can check it out for you if you'd like...and that one came from Hong Kong, which is basically where my "hook-up" is.

I totally agree about the lack of security - that's one reason I don't have that deck myself. I think it has a code you can program, but what thief is gonna know that until he has already stolen the thing? I guess the best theft-dterrent with something like that would be to make a "dummy" face out of the stock deck, and try to fit it over the nice one when you leave the car. That's been done plenty of times - take some imagination, I suppose.

Some Dinx2 units do have detachable faces and stuff - I'm not sure which ones, though - and I'm not sure about the ones on that site. Maybe it says in the documentation.

Feel free to drop me a line or post if you're interested or have any other questions I may be able to help with.

Thanks for that info. yeah that super secret security number doesn't do much when your window is smashed out at 12:00 in the morning after a movie. You'd think they'd atleast make a little panel of the face that comes of and has a blinking light or something.

the faux stock faceplate is one of my favorite stealh manuevers too.

I was actually going to post to see if anyone happened to have a stock P5 radio that had shorted out or something.

Do you have any idea where i could get a face? Is there any companies out there that specifically make fake stock faceplates?

I'll try to do some looking...
:D

I would think you could use the faceplate from any Double-din stock radio.

Also - check out eBay - I sold my stock P5 deck there (I got about $150 too!) - but maybe you can find one for cheap, especially if it's busted.

eBay needs to steal Fortunoff's slogan - "The Source"!

i thought that a Double Din with a CD/DVD/Mp3 disc solt and an LCD screeen was kind of an obvious good idea!

but... I haven't seen one yet! it's not like it isn't do-able.
probably would cost like $1800 though :D

let me know if/when you find one....

yeah ... that one is pretty fresh... I just recently came across it too!

but i have no tapes :(
and subsequently no use for a tape deck...

I really dig the Japanese ones with mini disc and mp3/cd..

:D nice Mike...!!!!

2 questions... Fo you have an anti-theft deterrant...? (I'd assume that you do for the bottom HU with detachable face,) but what about the LCD?

and also... Did both of those fit right in, or did you build or buy an adapter for that DoubleDin space?

looking pretty tight,

Ok, ... for anyone that has access to random LCD screens

What size screen would fill the double din space the best? i.e. with the least amount of leftover space?

Arkos P5... I second that question!

I'm wondring the same thing, but haven't seen too much done yet. Everyone I've seen has flip out LCDs...

Also does anyone know where we could get a Double-Din adapter/mounting kit for a LCD screen.

I'd assume that since companies like metrix makes Double-Din radio maounting kits, there'd be a company that makes the same thing for LCD's...

its just a black piece of plexiglas. i cut it with a hacksaw because i lost my plexiglas cutting tool, so the edge is uneven / jagged ATM, but it still looks pretty cool, just dont have the time to fix it yet :)

everyone says it looks way better than the giant DD stock unit.
