I just bought a Protege5 last week and really love the car. The shift Knob is a tad on the big side for my taste though. SOOOO, I thought, "Hmm, the that I checked out a few months ago had a really nice shift knob. I'll just order one of those from my friendly neighborhood Mazda dealer and order one." YEAH RIGHT! He actually laughed when he told me the price, $240! So anybody wanna trade theirs for my P5's?? :D

Something tells me the MP3 folks who replaced theirs with a new one would sell it to you at a dramatically reduced price!

...

Hmm.... I could be willing to part with mine for about $60+shipping.

I haven't replaced it yet, but I am looking to do so and this would allow me some money to be able to purchase a new one.

That wasn't my origional intent, but I'm not one to pass up a good offer. Assuming of course that it's in good shape :D If you decide to go ahead and do that, please send me an email or a pm.

Be careful! The shifter threads for the Protege 5 and MP3 are very different! The Shift Knob from a MP3 will not fit onto the stock shifter of a Protege 5 without a lot of modification.

Thanks for the info Section 8! I suppose that I could get around it by buying a short shift from kartboy or somebody for the MP3 and see if it'll fit in the P5.

1) Kartboy's shifter WILL work in the P5.
2) The threads for the P5 are 10mm 1.25 pitch. Supposed to be the same as the Miata (not sure what years) folks.

You will not solve your problem by buying the Kartboy short shifter for your Pro5. The threads on it will be the same as you have stock. All mazdas as far as I know share the same thread pitch except the MP3...it's different...so there really is no way to use the shift knob from an MP3 in a protege 5 unless you were to buy the shifter from the MP3 along with it....
