Alarm needed?

I have a 3s sedan and I usually don't keep things in the cabin, so I was just wondering if I would need a car alarm. Would there be any way for a thief to get around the engine immobilizer to steal my car? Thanks

Its important to have an alarm on all new cars. Mine is a passive alarm which when the alarm goes off the engine wont start until its been deactivated, professionals although can get around it i'm sure but why would they go through the trouble if they can get a car without an alarm

My car got stolen in May this year. Had a killswitch and an alarm on the doors from the manufacturer just like the Mazda3. If they want your car they'll take it, it's as simple as that. Manufacturer's alarms don't really do much since the theives expect them and know where they are.

An easy and cheap way to deter theft is to put a second independant alarm with the horn under the dash inside the car. Makes it slightly unpleasant for the thief to stick his head under the dash to find the horn when he's got 120decibels going in his ears. This can be wired very cheaply with materials from radio shack using a hidden on/off toggle switch to control it. The only thing is that you have to remember to turn it off when you get in the car half-asleep in the morning or you'll get a nasty wake-up call. Alternatively you could use it only when you park in risky places like movie theares etc... but then I don't know about other areas but around my house the new trend is to steal cars from driveways in the middle of the night. A buddy of mine got his car stolen the night he got it...

Studies show...

...the most effective adjunct device you could use is "The Club". Highly visible and difficult to remove (unless your a pro then you are through it in 20 seconds). Do yourself one favor, video document your wheels including any "aftermarket add-on's." This will help your insurance company cut you a check for the amount you deserve when your car is stolen.

Although the 120 Db horn under the dash is a great idea, but as you pointed out, if they want your car they are going to take it.

I think it take less than 20 seconds to cut your wheel....club is the most useless piece of an alarm....

They spray freon into the lock on the club to get it nice and cold. Then they smash it with a hammer and the lock busts apart. The problem is that it is/was the most widely studied alarm/adjunct in the market and it is reconized nation-wide by the National Insurance Institute as "the most effective deterant." I agree w/ your opinion, the fact is the insurance companies are running the show.

If you want you can get another alarm that doesn't interfear with the stock settings too much....once you do remote start they void like half the warrenty. as stated before...alot of people got their cars taken by flatbead tow truck...the idea with the siren under dash isn't a bad idea cause what thief usualy caries osha approved protective hearing devices? also make shure you run it to a small battery in the trunk so when they pop the hood and pull negative cable...it doesn't stop. In most case scenario the thief will dissapear once the alarm in the car goes off cause they atract bystanders to look in their direction. most car alarms won't phase the average person...my car alarm is loud as hell on a hot day so people can't ignore it. tint windows and place sun screen in windsheild is one security feature you wanna invest in if you plan on installing I.C.E. there is a club like item that attaches to the brake pedal... only way around that is basicly breaking the locking mechinism. If you tint the windows and have one of those then the thief who wasn't anticipating on a club like device will be drasticly slown down. remember most thieves get the hang of stealing a certain kind of car so they carry tools for maybe just that application. Park with the drive wheels facing the back of the parking spot to make towing a task. Also turn wheels to curb. There should be a sticky on how to make your car a harder target. one thread on another forum had tips like using multiple combination of screws (flathead, philips and hex) to make stealing your traditional style head unit a not so simple in and out task.

Hey thanks for all the responses. I'm really not good at electronics, so how would I install the horn under the dash? Also, what was the name of that brake club? Wasn't it the "deadbolt for your car?" Anyone have any experience with it?
