Air Intake

I am wonder what cold air intakes people would recommend? Also is there a huge difference between a K&N or just a smaller less well known company?

Thanks

I have a K&N. I love it. I don't think there's much of a difference between the companies except places that you bolt some of the braces. I had an eBay intake for a while and those were pretty much pipes without brackets, so it would wobble around in the engine bay and it against the frame.

Also I have been reading a lot about either going with a CAI or a SRI, I live in Vancouver and it is really wet does anyone have any opinions?

honestly, you'll be fine with the SRI. I had an AEM SRI on my Protege ES, and I loved it because it definitely brought out some power and made the engine sound so much better. the install is as easy as it gets - at the time, I had never worked on a car in my life and was able to install the AEM on my own with no problems.

by the way, I had an older version of this one: http://www.aemintakes.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=22-481P. (mine didn't have the DryFlow filter, so I had to oil it every 50,000 miles). it also fits the P5, assuming it has a manual transmission. the AT version is different (shorter).

here's how it looked in my car:

the piping really doesnt matter too much, just make sure you have a good filter. i've been hearing good stuff about the AEM dry filter, it's easier to clean too.

Simota is probably the cheapest of the name brands, and mine works fine. I just converted it to an SRI, and while I think I am going back to a CAI, it works great ether way. It comes with braces so you can secure it in the bay (unlike some ebay kits). The only problem is that some of my couplers are starting to wear and need replacing, but I think that's the case on almost all kits. Protephile sells them on here (I got mine for $100 or so), and I think Protegegarage has them too.

Intake pipe size and length do matter, as well as the intake.

I've muddled with some custom setups on my Pro5 and Integra.

I'm on my phone, but will post links to the evidence.

Unless you combine with other breathing enhancements (header and exhaust), by itself on a stock FS motor, it's not that big a difference.

Hey thanks a lot everyone, ya I think I'll go with a CAI. I was hesitant to buy one off eBay, but I'll look for one on some other online sites.

I've heard a couple guys with Injen intakes say they whistle at idle and drives them crazy. I have an AEM like the cat above with pics and I've not had any problems at all with mine and I like it very much. I noticed a little bit better throttle response and honestly, I like the sound of an air intake vs stock airbox with a K&N drop in filter. But I figure you might gain 1-2hp from it, not much. And I've driven through rain and snow with my intake for 2 years now without any problems, so with this particular AEM setup I wouldn't worry too much about water being sucked into the intake. However, I did have an AEM cold air intake on my Civic and it pulled water into the motor when it was raining really badly and I accidently ran through a deep puddle. Forunately I was able to suck the water out of the intake mani and head, changed the spark plugs and she fired right up and ran fine. But if you're worried about hydrolock, buy a AEM bypass valve for $40. SCC magazine did a review a few years back with a NSX and they completely submerged the intake pipe in water and the bypass valve worked flawlessly.

I have an Injen CAI. I actually just took off the filter for cleaning yesterday and it was already pretty clean. No evidence of moisture or anything. The sound is pretty good, and much better compared to the stock air box. Easy installation. I'd recommend it.

any cai with 3" piping is fine. run a name brand filter and you are good to go. i'd honestly purchase a simota if i were you though

i got an ebay sri with a k&n. sonded great under acceleration but when crusing or at idle the was an annoying whistle so i went back to stock
