Air Intake Bad Mass Air Flow

2003 Protege5
I just bought a 2003 Protege 5 and I was told by a family friend that works @ a Mazda dealer not to put on a cold air intake. He said he has had to replace many Mass Air Flows because of the intakes, has anyone had this problem. I was told by a local speed shop that the K&N kits are not that good due to the oil on the filters, I was told to use the AEM short intake. I've also heard of people putting on an intake and losing power which I find strange.

The oil from a K&N can clog up a MAF, AEM dry flow filters work just fine. A lot of people who have problems probably have their MAF right up against the back of the filter.

You're lumping together a lot of information into a jumble of misinformation...None of these statements are 100% true...

First...a bad MAF from a CAI is not true....MAF sensors can go bad for a few reasons, but to relate it to an intake is just false.

Second, Oiled K&N filters actually allow better airflow for a longer period than the AEM DryFlow...The dryflow has smaller particle filters and DO flow more air when they are 100% clean...These smaller particle filter does, however, get clogged much faster and performance degrades quickly. So it's a toss up...either way the AEM might be easier, but you'll want to clean it more often.

Losing power..partly correct...You may lose a little low end torque, but you will increase high-end air flow, which increases HP...

However, the gains/losses from a Intake mod are basically zero...It is purely a noisemaker without exhaust, intake manifold porting, and a header, all of which will benefit more than an intake.

ive never heard this, dryflow filters are good, i have the wr secret weapon and have no complaints, filter is like the AEM dryflow but it is foam and is washable
