air filter

i heard my friend said if you change your air filter to K&N or others..it will gain more horsepower..is that true???
and what kind of air filter is the best?? how much??
does it work???

the best is definetly the K&N, yes it will give a slight hp increase maybe 2 - 4 but it will make your engine sound better, you won't get the hp that a full intake would but you get something for really cheap

I changed mine a few weeks ago to the K+N. Did I notice a difference in sound/hp/mileage....no. Actually, that's a lie, I hear a slight whine when I get off the gas.

Of course Mine's an auto cause the wife can't drive stick

But, for 60 bucks or so...sure, spend the cash. You'll know it's there, and in the really long run, you'll be ahead cause you won't have to buy filters.

i agree with humvee. no hp or mpg gains. just a little louder. also removed the air silencer. now i am thinking that its cheaper to drop a new air filter in from kmart every 6,000 miles than to buy a k&n, buy a cleaner kit every onces in a while and spending time cleaning it, possibly damaging it or putting too much oil on and not having a car while the filter dries out.

I just drove from Cincinnati to the Smoky Mountains and back with a K&N filter that I put in on Friday. It feels like there is better throttle response, but this is just my opinion.

I picked one up for $29 at a local auto parts store - bottom line, I like the fact that the filter is reusable (up to 25 times according to K&N) and it feels a little quicker.

Eventually, I would like to get a CAI, but in the meantime, I recommend it.

That's 60 bucks Canadian folks (the the guy threw in a recharge kit for free too)

YellowMP5 - Keep the stock paper filter to use while you clean the K+N

how do you change the air filter??
and what kind of k&n filter we use??
i'm sure there are many different kinds

go to the K&N website and it will help you look up the part number for your car. It's really easy. I found it and posted it in another thread on here for the MP3. Not sure if the P5 is the same.

sorry for being stupid but, can someone explain a little more about having a better throttle response? is that sound of the engine?

K&N

Better throttle response means a shorter delay in the amount of time it takes the engine to react when you apply or release the throttle.

The noise with the K&N when engine braking, or coasting in 5th, is like a mild groaning/rumbling noise from the engine. Pretty quiet though, not annoying at all.

My sister has a 93 Del Sol with an Intake (Full CAI) and that thing makes all sorts of noise. It roars under throttle loud enough to drown out the sound of her exhaust.
