Air Filter Question

Just curious, in addition to allegedly improving HP, will the K&N Panel Filter also reduce my gas mileage? I've also heard that I should disconnect my battery for a certain amount of time after installing the filter to allow the engine computer to realign itself with the new airflow. What is the exact reasoning for doing the disconnect and how long should I leave it disconnected?

Take a look at the other threads on the board - this has come up a few times.

HP gain? - no, none noticable
Mileage gain - no, none noticable.

Some people have said they have livelier throttle response, but I haven't noticed that either.

I believe you only have to disconnect if you get a whole new intake - not just a filter.

The K&N drop-in panel air filter on my P5 showed a little better throttle response and a little better torque on the lower end. I noticed at the next fill up that I achieved an extra mile per gallon (even after jumping on the gas w/ the mild horsepower gains from the new filter).

With the new filter the engine realizes more air flow. Now the ECU needs to realize this. That is why you have to disconnect the battery to "reset" the ECU's air/fuel mixture at idle. (An actual reset of the ECU would take the computer ~500 miles to relearn how you drive the car for air/fuel mixture and automatic transmission mapping if applicable).

When you drop in the new filter or other performance mods, you should disconnect the negative terminal for around a half an hour. Then reconnect the battery. Wait a little bit before starting your car. Start your car without touching the accelorator. Wait for your car's ECU to remap the air/fuel mixture at idle for around 15-20 minutes. Then drive the car like you would normally would for an hour or so. Then you can jump on the gas all you want.

That's how I treated the filter swap/ECU remap because I'm anal. This seems to be the cheapest and easiest mod that almost anyone can do. I hope this helps.

NO, it should NOT reduce your milage....it MAY increase it...just depends on how you drive and the individual car....some people see an incerase...some don't. one thing that is for sure...the K&N flows better than a paper filter...and it will certainly last longer, get a "cleaning kit" which consists of the cleaner and the oil...in the long run the K&N will save you money on filters. That is if you are the type that keeps up with their car and would normally replace the intake filter when you are SUPPOSED to! lol

As far as resetting the ECU....Carl did a good job of describing the procedure....just one thing to add....after you disconnect the NEGITIVE terminal.....hop in the car and mash the brakes a few times....yes the brakes.....there are a few capacitors that are within the system that this will make discharge....removing any and all electrical charge from the system.

After doing this procedure I had NO problems with the car from the very first time I started it up and allowed it to idle for 10 to 15 minutes.....and that was after installing a complete new intake. :D

K&N FILTER CHANGE.

Hey Sir Nuke,
I did the change but I was not aware of doing the "reset" of the ECU. I have already driven my P5 for way over the 500 miles, dos this makes any difference or can I still do the reset even if I had driven the P5 with the K&N filter for a while?

At this point...your ecu has already learned the new set up...keep driving! lol

its just that when you FIRST change anything like the air flow...your ecu may detect the difference and POSSIBLY make the car run rough or something....so its like a "just in case" sorta thing.....if you didn't do it when you installed the filter...the ECU has certainly learned it by now...so if everything is running smoothe.....leave it alone.

K&N FILTER ?

Nukeman,
Thanks for the reply, since I do not have any issues with it and the P5 is running smooth with no problems. If I would have know before hand I would have done it. Oh well, it is all good. Thanks Nuke...
