Air Conditioner Question

:
2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege
Anybody have their car's A/C not work after the winter? It's raining here today and the windows were fogging up. I turned on the A/C and got nothing. It usually comes on all the time when the temp is above 0 deg C.

No, it did not. Usually you notice when the compressor comes on, etc. because the rpm's rise, but nothing this time. The only thing that came on was the green A/C light on the switch. The windows did eventually defrost though.

DId you try it on all 4 speed settings for the fan? I know we have problems with the fan controller. Will the fan work when you don't have the AC/ defogger? Maybe check the AC compressor and make sure it isn't seized up after sitting for the winter.

Air blows on all speeds and in all modes, recirculate works in all modes and speed, the rear defrost works as well.

If the compressor is seized, is that an expensive fix? Hopefully I'll get back in my car after work and the thing will start working by itself.

check your AC fuse. Dont remember if its under the hood, or on the driverside box.

Sounds like a fuse tho

I think AC fuse is under the hood but don't quote me on it.

If it is seized then it might need to be replaced and depending on what and how will determine price. I do as much of my own work as possible and that has saved me thousands. To change the compressor wouldn't be too hard: purge the AC, disconnect hard lines, electrical wiring, remove accessory (sp?) belt, remove compressor, re-install. I am not too sure but I assume you could check if it is seized by seeing if you can turn the pulley, might have to have the front wheels off the ground, might not, anybody else have input on that. This is something I haven't had to work on yet.

i have had the whole a/c light flickering problem...i've wiggled the harness around and it finally started working part-time...yesterday, it started blowing hot air even with the a/c light was on. i was planning on pulling the harness apart and doing the fix in the how-to section, but now i obviously have another problem. what could cause the a/c not to work even with the light on? is it the fuse/relay or would it be the HVAC unit in the dash? any help would be greatly appreciated...i need to fix this as quickly as possible...my son is in my car and with my car sitting in the sun all day with 90* heat, the hour-long ride home isn't good for him.

thanks!

Interesting thing is that my AC just went out recently too. My A/C would all of a sudden blow warm then Cool. I ended up finding my Compressor smoking when I stopped to look????

Pulley is spinning I made sure of that. You would think by now I would have tore that belt it's been a couple weeks. the smoke was coming from one of the wires right on the compressor. It looks like some sort of switch.

Hi everyone, just wanted to preface that I am brand new to forums... had a question. I recently bought my P5 and among other things, the A/C just went out - just stopped blowing cold a few days after I got it. After a peek under the hood I see the line that goes from the dryer to the condenser is busted. It appears the line and condenser are all one piece, but I'm not exactly mechanically inclined and the guy at the parts shop couldn't tell me either. Do I need to buy a whole new condenser, or can I just replace the line? Or can I have the line welded back together?? :) Thanks!

i bet its the high side line thats the one that burst on my car i spen all the money on a new receiver dryer and the low side line but it ended up being the high side one the one that is a b**** to take out and you have to take out the whole radiator cost around 2gs maybe if you get the dealer to do it

2gs to get the ac line and a new receiver dryer and the charge including labour to take the radiator and bumper off i think

Wow, that still seems pretty steep. I haven't had anything done at the dealer before so I don't know what there rates are. I think I could manage without AC for that price.

yeah thats why i never fixed mine got as far as the one line and the receiver dryer after that i was like **** trhat

hey i having some kind of problems with my AC, when i first star driving in the morning the Ac works perfect as soon the compressor go on the RPMs goes a little higher which is normal but after a while of being driving when the AC compressor goes on the RPMs does not go littler higher either the RPMs stays normal or just goes down and the comes back up, it is normal on this cars?

sounds like it might be cycling on and off on low pressure or high pressure check that the ac fan at radiator is coming on when compressor is on if its not that would cause high pressure condition and to determine if its going off on low pressure you would need a set of gauges. Good luck keep us posted
