Umm, how? (uhm) If the 40 is the aspect ratio to the width, 215mm*.40 = 86mm, 205mm*.45 = 92.25mm sidewalls. I would expect more wheel gap with 215/40/17 over the stock 205/45/17. Also, 215/45/17 would be a closer match, but would probably rub with my 2" drop. But hey, you most likely know more about this than I, and I need tires soon and would prefer 215s, but can't do the 215/45/17 with my 2" drop. P.S. I am looking for AVS ES100s. So far I see $97 a tire + $35 shipping for stock size. Can yo do better?
