Aftermarket oil Dipstick

2016 CX-5 Sport owner here. Has anyone had any luck with using an aftermarket engine oil dipstick for their 2013-2016 CX-5? I’ve tried getting an accurate reading on this thing I’m comfortable with but have had zero luck. I’ve tried most of the suggestions from other forum members without success. I just get smeared oil every time. I’m not sure I want to try using 5w-20 instead of the 0w-20 that’s recommended.

I've never heard of such a thing.

How do you usually check your oil?

when the engine is cold? the manual states to shut the engine off after reaching full operating temp and waiting at least 5 minutes before checking. I wipe the oil off the dipstick to put it back in. One side tends to be smeared, but you can still get a reasonably accurate reading by simply checking the other side. Not sure why it is a PITA that way, but 5W30 or whatever should actually be thick enough to give you some sort of reading on the dipstick in the first place.

You absolutely can and probably should go for 5w30 or whatever. Don't worry about that.

5w20 should work fine as your base viscosity is still 20 weight.
Unless you're in an extremely cold environment the 5 weight cold viscosity shouldn't hurt in any way.
Good luck.

Take some sandpaper and scuff up the bottom ~3" of the dipstick, both sides. Bonus points if you can make a sort of crosshatch pattern. Makes the oil stick to it much better and easier to read.

FWIW, I also have a Tacoma that uses 5W-30 and the oil is/was just as hard to read on that. The sandpaper trick worked for both vehicles.

But yeah you gotta let it sit for a few mins before checking. And also don't even bother checking the level right after filling. Start the engine and run it for a min or two while gently revving it everyone once in a while (or just drive it around the block). Then shut it off and check it after 10+ mins. I never get accurate readings right after filling.
