accident

My sister did a solid $3,000 damage on winter, and then next winter totaled her Grand Am. Both were in snowy conditions.

I can't even count the number of times she got stuck in snowbanks...she wasn't the smartest driver (and still isn't has like 4 tickets in the past 2-3 years)

At the time I was 14. I can remember the way she drove, how she'd slide past turns and spin around in subs....that stuff used to scare the s*** out of me, i never wanted to drive in the snow.

But now that i've driven through two winters, i realize there was nothing scary about the snow, just my sister! The Dunlops have never done me wrong. I can remember my sister always blaming her car on the bad snow driving (yet the 20 other kids at my school driving Grand Ams never had problems)

The point is...the tires don't suck in the snow, the car doesn't suck in the snow, the driver just doesn't respect the snow.

that looks like a little too little damage to be totalled..

what a good insurance compnay you have. who are you with?

Well perhaps frame damage? Looking closely at the closeup picture, I can see the yellow frame on the inside is twisted. Also I noticed the tire looks like it might be flat. That makes me think possible wheel damage. My girlfriend had a similar accident once in her civic. No frame damage, but replacing the whole front end AND the entire front wheel assembly cost the insurance company well over 10k. Also, the hood would probably have to be replaced otherwise it might not rest flush with the new body panels...

I think the problem with our cars is NOT the dunlops. It's the way they handle in the summer compared to winter. The reason they handle so differently: weight. Our cars are very light and while it aids greatly in cornering, it makes things very difficult in slippery conditions. We just have to realize this and compensate for it.

weird....

You know about those Dunlops,

After carefully maintaining them and doing the rotations, at around 12K with no alignment troubles, I was cruising up I-40 to Asheville, NC in a mild rainstorm. The speed limit was 70mph and I was doing around 63mph because of the rain. I noticed the tires kept doing this skip/grab kinda thing and wanted to hydroplane. Even when I slowed down to 55mph, it kept doing it. All that and nearly getting mowed over by everyone coming up on me fast and flying by me, including some elderly lady in a Geo Metro.

I have driven in all kinds of storms....rain, hurricanes, snow, ice and every other imaginable kind with no trouble (I started driving with my pop when I was 12....yea yea I know...illegal). I have never had tires act like this when they were still so young! I noticed that some of you have said "they are great in the summer and when it is dry". I noticed that too. But it is not always like that when your travelling, so to me that makes them useless!

I switched to some new ones right away and when I traded the P5 those newer tires had about 18K on em' with no troubles whatsoever in any kind of weather. I respect everyones' opinion on this, but I thought I should get my two cents in because of what happened to me.

It could be driver error on our "totaled" guy here, could be tires, could be both, who knows.....But that car does not look totaled....Unless that frame really took a beating.......Strange.

I think looks can be deceiving on modern cars as far as damage is concerned. Vehicle are designed to bend and absorb damage so the soft stuff on the inside stays in one piece.

I think if you removed the bumper cover and fender the frame rail on the passenger side might be toast. Kind of scary to think a pretty minor fender bender like this could total a car.

Here is what @15 to 20 mph will do to a '62 Studebaker Lark when I t-boned a 1996 Galant in 2000. The Studebaker only suffered superficial damage - Galant totaled

bad tires? they aren't that bad man. what exactly happened..?

Man...them 5000SP's totally SUCK!!! Noone here lives in the wet? Man, you can't go freaking 30MPH on I-95 without being a damn hovercraft.
The crappy Eagle GS-C's on my TurboBug could do 60+ before hydroplaning
as severely as those things do.
I called Mazda and complained to them, and told them they were gonna end up with a buttload of lawsuits if they continue using those piece of crap tires.

I never like DUnlop anyways....'cept motorycle tires.

ya i had the same problems with my dunlops in wet weather...they have that skip and grab effect on them now with 40 000km on them needless to say i'll be replacing them in the summer

PS: don't worry i have some goodyear ice grip winter tires on right now

I am driving on the stock dunlops - second winter in a row. You just need to use your head when snow is on the ground.

(werd)

this is also my second winter with my stock dunlops and i havent had a ny problems (knock on wood). i dont have ABS either. you just have to use your head.

I had to make a trip through the Rockies this winter so I purchased a set of winter tires and rims (Nexen tires) and the improvement was hugee. High speed braking was much more controlled, as was accelleration and turning. Never got stuck in snow and driving on ice was not a problem. I just put my dunlops back on and instantly noticed the difference. The rubber is much harder and suited for summer conditions. At least they'll last longer...

i live in south fl as well and i never felt safe driving on them i changed when i bought rims. kuhmos 711s could stick

I am soooo tired of people blaming their accidents "bad tires" instead of on what really caused their accidents: "bad driving."

Dude, I could drive around on slicks and not get in an accident in the snow. It is the driving, not the tires. If you know you got bad tires, slow down.

Simple as that.

Hey! MazdaVK5! Can i have your MAF sensor plug and as much wire as you can reach (just cut it) (just the 3 pin connector - not the sensor).

Please?

Can i? Can, i huh?
