AC--again

I went on a roadtrip from NC to NY this weekend and had some problems with the AC. I was driving for about 4 hours when the AC just stopped blowing air out...the whole unit froze. I shut it off and about an hour later it had defrosted and worked fine again. While defrosting, though, the dash starting leaking! Water was coming out from underneath the dash on the passenger side. I know the AC is a common topic on this board, but this is something I have never seen in a car. It was not that hot, and it wasn't working to hard...I just don't understand how this could happen. I make this trip probably 5 to 6 times a year, and I don't want this to happen again...so off to the dealer I go...

Keep us updated. Mine works in the MP3 but the light is finicky.

yea my light sometimes flickers but only in the 2 spot. . .and that was only when i was going like 110 on the freeway

only does it for 2 on mine too :wtf:
Doesn't matter the speed though.

Mine did the flickering thing, but it suddenly fixed itself. The freezing up and defrosting problem sounds like a freon pressure issue. Thats what happens on home A/C systems at least. Same thing also happened on my last car.

yeah, mine did it at 2 also, but it hasn't done it in about 4 months. so it's coo... coo coo that is.

wow seems like this is become somewhat common, wonder how many more people have had this happen to them?? and i hope Mazda will do something about it. i say take it in if under warranty and hope that they can fix it.

I took my car in at the beginning of the summer becuase the AC and fan would only work when set to '4'. They fixed that, but then on my last trip from Hamilton to Grand Rapids I noticed the light would flicker sometimes when set to '2'. I was going to take it in again, but now i'm thinking this might be 'normal'.

Does anyone notice if the AC actually stops when the light goes out? Or is it just the light flickering?

I never noticed the AC actualy stop. I think we need to all get ahold of a MAzda customer service rep and report the AC light issue. NO better way to get a TSB on it!

whoa! this is wierd.... mine does this too sometimes... not only flicker, but stop compressing, and hence cooling the friggen air... right in the middle of a scorcher of a summer!

I took it to the dealership to have it checked out, but they were dumbfounded... if you find the cause, give us the skinny

Mine never has flickered, thats not part of my problem. My problem was the freezing over of the unit. It better be covered by warrenty, there is no way I am paying for it. I made my appointment for Thursday, but I might need to switch it for the weekend--I'll keep everyone posted on the outcome.

I'm not sure if this applies, but I know that for instance, if you have a window air conditioner in your house that is too large for the room it will often freeze up in the same way you described. Maybe the thermostat in the car is messed up causing the AC to work overtime?

Thats possible, but I'll leave it up to the service people to worry about. I know the AC issue will be resolved, I'm just worried about the possible smell from all the leaking under the dash, onto the carpet.

that thing with the ac only working on 4 is to do with the heater resister, if you look at your heater box on the passenger side there should be a screwed in panel with a big white plug on it (4 wires) reaplacing that will fix the 4 problem, but as to the a/c freezing up that just don't sound right to me... imine used to do that to me on humid days and then just one day stopped...........

only worry is that my ac will now only work on frsh air, not recirculated air... its giving me the ...... coz on a 40C day i have to cook or choke on diesel fumes from trucks.... no happy jan....

Yeah, my ES did that crap all the time. The light would flicker and sometimes go out. Then you'd have to turn the switch off and back on to get the AC working again. 1,3, and 4 never had a problem though. Oh well I guess it's someone elses problem now since I no longer own it...LOL.
