ABS and Brake Upgrades

OK, this is just for the sake of rhetorical argument. ALL things being equal, tire size (OD) will make a difference in your ABS model that limits/engages ABS due to g-forces read through hub RPM. For example, a truck with 31 inch diameter tires stops at 60-0 in say 150 ft. If that same truck after an increase in tire size to 35 inches still stops i n 150 ft, then the RPM of the hub will be fewer. Therefore if the ABS system reads the g-forces from the hub RPM, it will think in the second example that it decelerated slower (less g-force), when actually the deceleration (in ft/sec) was the same. And remember deceleration is measured in ft/sec, physics doesn't care about hub RPM.

Anyway, I agree, too much thought into this, just upgrade the brakes and enjoy.

Natey- ss lines + good pads + JIC coilovers = :D

I don't think you will need a new master cylinder unless you are able to press the pedal all the way to the floor and you still are not locking your wheels. But I'd talk to the manufactor of the brake kit and ask their opinion.

If you do go with a new master cylinder, the 2 things to remember are: a larger master cylinder requires a higher pedal effort to get the same braking force and your pedal travel will be less to achieve the same braking force making it more difficult to modulate brake pressure. However, this will be offset somewhat by the fact that your new calipers will most likely have larger pistons in them then the stock calipers. And larger pistons in your calipers will require less pedal effort to achieve the same braking force plus they will require more fluid which in turn requires more pedal travel.

I hope I havn't confused you too much.

maybe i am thinking too much about this....oh well....it was an idea that crossed my mind. good to see so much discussion about it though. i think the only way we can really test to see if the abs helps or hinders a kick arse brake system is to put on a brake system and test it with and without abs. if the car stops quicker with abs, my points are useless....but if the car stops quicker without abs, maybe my points are valid??? anyway, i'll just get the AP racing set up that i want and enjoy...

There ya go(thumb) I haven't actually measured, but I've got SS lines, Hawk HPS pads in the front, OEM rear and Powerslot rotors and my Butt Brake-O-Meter says the car stops faster, and has much better pedal feel. Also, just for pespective, my wife has an ES sedan without ABS, and her car has had better pedal feel from day one. In fact I'd probably still trade with hers, even with all my upgrades, go figure....
